Only the dead can save us.
Bastion is the crown prince of the kingdom Van'Li-on, a dutiful soldier, master blacksmith, and perpetual shirker of responsibilities. His younger brother Van, more scholar than soldier, spends his days in the First Mage's tower studying Elemental Manipulation. The brothers live a picturesque life in a kingdom that has known peace for decades.
Yet below the shiny veneer, a rot slowly spreads across the land. Bastion is tasked with investigating reports of nearby villagers, both alive and recently buried, disappearing in the night. Unknowingly, his duty leads him into a trap set by his own sister, Jean, and he finds himself, too, counted among the missing. When Bastion fails to return home, Van sets off on a journey across the Southern Continent to find and rescue his brother, amassing a motley crew of allies along the way.
Unfortunately, Bastion is no longer among the living as he's been captured, killed, and reanimated by a centuries old Necromancer. Though her methods vile, her goal is one of worldly salvation and Bastion eventually embraces his role as a Lich: the most powerful incarnation in her undead army. Their master/servant relationship mutates into something much more as the growing scope of danger facing the world forces them both to compromise their positions. A foe, long thought defeated has returned enmasse and the undead alone can stifle their assault.
Brothers find themselves at odds upon their eventual reunion: Van unable to accept what his brother has become, and Bastion unable, and in truth unwilling, to change his fate. And so, Van and his ever growing band of followers once again find themselves questing for answers across the land of the living. Until those answers are found, Bastion and his undead wield the power of death itself to face the looming threat head on, providing a shield for the world that may shatter a million times but can never be destroyed.
