Ziva This is a very thoughtful review. Well put.

Strona po stronie I just love Ann Patchett's style :)

message 3: by Susan (new)

Susan Schaefer Bernardo Engaging characters, poignant plot, some mystery. Ann Patchett must do some serious research - her attention to detail and ability to capture the essence of characters, locations, professions - is remarkable.

Mary My exact reason for giving it a four star instead of five. I've read most of her books and love her style of writing and the story she tells. I love the book until the last sentence. I realize finally that I've felt this way about each of her books--I am so taken in and wrapped up in the story that I just don't want it to end. I want to read more about these characters and see the choices they make. I'm always left disappointed. But, after reading your review, maybe that is not a bad thing. I'm left to imagine in my own mind what happens next to these characters. (Or perhaps it leaves it open to writing sequel!?!?)

message 5: by Susy (new)

Susy Miller This is exactly how I felt! Well said. Now I have to read Bel Canto.

message 6: by Cherie (new)

Cherie I totally agree, Laura!

message 7: by Hein (new)

Hein Matthew Hattie Boring

message 8: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Hamilton Laura wrote exactly what I was telling my husband this morning! The books just end after you are so engrossed. But, what other way can they end? There is more to the story that we are left to imagine. It’s not a fairy tale where the all lived happily ever after. I love Ann Patchett’s writing!

message 9: by Lynn (new)

Lynn Asmus I’m the same way. Rarely will I give one or two stars because I don’t finish a book I’m not enjoying.

message 10: by Patricia (new)

Patricia I have the same feeling when I finish her books. Want there to be more of the story!

message 11: by Loretta (new)

Loretta TheMoodyRedhead I feel the same way! I like all books. I give all my reviews 4 or 5 stars. If I absolutely can’t stand a book (which has actually only happened a handful of times), I will quickly skim through and eventually skip it all together. However, that is only after I give it one more chance because my favorite series of all time that I’ve read at least 10 times, I was so bored with it the first couple of chapters. 6 months after the first try I picked it up again and adore all of them to this day (The series I’m talking about is by Jan Karon. Mitford series. First book in the series is “At Home in Mitford”.
But anyway, I enjoyed your review and I plan to read books by Patchett soon. I’ve never even heard of this author!

message 12: by Loretta (new)

Loretta TheMoodyRedhead I’m torn about whether or not to read this book, because I love your review. You make me want to read it because Patchett’s style and hypnotic effect of writing, but at the same time I don’t want to use my own imagination to create an ending, a true ending. Sigh

message 13: by Liza (new)

Liza McQuade I agree! I loved it. I like all her books but this was a favorite!

message 14: by madyn (new)

madyn powers Yes you perfectly described how I feel about all of her books!

message 15: by Amy (new)

Amy I didn’t like the way it was ended & I’ve read several of her books. I’ve never felt like this about any of her other books. I intend to read/listen to Bel Canto when it’s my turn at the library.

message 16: by Kristi RN (new)

Kristi RN Sabine has lived in my head since I read this.
