About the Old Norse and Sámi parts: I wanted to write Ib's POV as if the reader was there in the moment. Since Ib didn't understand Old Norse or Sámi, the reader wouldn't either, and that way I create the same feelings of confusion or frustration in the reader as Ib must have felt. I also wanted to give the reader the impression that there is this whole other world going on, and we're only getting a glimpse at it.
Needless to say, it was a very brazen decision, and in the back of my head I knew it would bite me in the rear!
