I think this may have been written before ant gender was generally known... But I did find this a memorable error.
The author does deal with this issue in the text. When the Queen of Queens tells Dreamer the story about how the ants’ social structure developed in chapter 20. I have the Hamlyn 1984 paper and it’s on page 227. I don’t want to give a spoiler but I think it isn’t important to the story. She explains why the workers and soldiers are called ‘he’. “And they took the titles away from the males and became masculine even in name.” So good news! You can now give a five star review!
