Where in the world did you forget that this was 'fiction' . This is an outright attack. You know, lots of people meet and move in together in that space of time, I did and 40 yrs later still together. Why is your opinion of this the only correct one? Get off your high horse
I was.thinking the same thing with every word I read, does this person realize it is fiction, not real life? As for not being circumcised in the US, there are more who aren't than she knows. Neither of my kids are and they are 38 and 31 years old.
Smh Good Grief. This review deserves a one star for its entitlement, gatekeeping, and ignorance. When a minority speaks about their own lives we (clap) do not (clap) correct them.
Was it really that scary to read about someone being uncut?
I mirror what other comments have said. Don't tell a minority that their truth is wrong or not good enough.
Sexuality is fluid and takes many shapes, and Bisexuality and pansexuality exist, so maybe stop gatekeeping queerness.
And the circumcision gripe? Super weird... My former partner is uncircumcised and I know plenty of other men who are uncut also (in the US). I think you're just incorrect.
As a woman, please don't try and tell men how common or uncommon it is to be circumcised. It's not our place. And some stats for you, just in case you are interested in the ACTUAL numbers:
In the United States, the rate of circumcision peaked at nearly 90% in the early 1960s and began to decline in the 1970s. By 1970–1979, the prevalence of circumcision was 82%, and by 1980–1989, it was 79.8%. In 1996, the rate had declined to about 65%.
The rate of circumcision varies by region and demographics:
Midwest: 80%
Northeast: 68%
South: 64%
West: 34%
White: 81%
Black: 65%
Hispanic: 54%
So not nearly as uncommon as you think it is.
Why am I not surprised to see a narrow minded review about sexuality, and someone putting a label on in and expecting it to fit in a neat little box.
Oh please educate yourself.
There’s a reason why your book group friends didn’t have such an issue with the book, you just seem to be wholly ignorant.
Tell me you know nothing about the queer community without telling me. Or much of anything else for that matter.
There’s a word for moving in together quickly. Uhauling. And it was common in the 90s. We’re talking days to weeks. Not the period of time it takes to grow a child.
Others spoke well on the statistics of circumcision in the US. But more importantly, that’s NOT how triggers work. He didn’t crawl into bed with you, so you don’t actually need to know if he’s cut or not. If you don’t want to read it, don’t. However having people with different body types isn’t grounds for a content warning. In fact, there’s a word for that, too. Diversity.
The fact that you created a new profile for this proves you knew it would not be received well by those in your own circle. I can’t imagine the level of awkward in that book club meeting. You might need a new secret one of those, too.
Are you seriously suggesting a trigger warning for uncircumcision? Like, making this suggestion without irony? You are... I...
I can't. I can't! It's too much... The privilege. The lack of knowledge. It's just too much.
Seriously, 1 star for your ridiculous review. If I could rate it a 0, I would.
I read the author’s Thread’s comment where Jessica stated she was blasted. No names were mentioned. Questions were asked, disbelief expressed, but there was nothing I considered to be “blasted” about in the post. I’m now questioning why someone went out of their way to create drama about a book from an unknown author. It is cool that a book club picked up such a book that’s barely sold any copies at this point and seems to be pretty niche in its reader base.
My husband and I meet in October 1998. Our first date was Christmas Eve. He was living with me full-time in late January 1999. We have been married 24 years, legally for 10. Is that too fast for you?
Rory was born in Scotland to Scottish parents. Mutilating boys is not common practice there.
It makes me sad that you are so unhappy with your life that you choose that denigrate an independent author with your unhappiness. Get the f*** over yourself.
What absolute garbage. Especially considering that you’re hiding behind an anonymous account.
Grey and Green eyes are uncommon, should they also be in a trigger warning?
People didn’t move in together quickly in the 90’s? Hahahaha! I guess I hallucinated my own life experience.
It’s FICTION it’s written in OWN VOICES. Unless you’re a gay man, maybe you should sit down and shut it.
Oh Jessica, you my dear are an absolute idiot. On what planet is not being circumcised a trigger….did you grasp your pearls when you read that he had a bit of skin still attached to his dick. As for moving too fast, I met my ex in Feb ‘96 and was living with him by September ‘96, maybe that’s too fast for YOU but that’s just YOU. And last of all it’s a fictional story ffs….if you don’t like it, put it down and move along to something else.
