I'm surprised that Everand doesn't have the audio, they often have the newest releases.

message 21: by McKensi (new)

McKensi Ensminger This is great! I just happened to have this checked out on Libby, anyway!

message 22: by Ina (new)

Ina Skipping this oone. I have read some of his books and decided I'm giving up on him. I don't get along with his writing style. :/

message 23: by Ex Libris KJ (new)

Ex Libris KJ Just started this last night! Already feeling a bit nervous with the first few chapters lol

message 24: by Erika (new)

Erika This was fun and creepy. I see some people didn't care for the story being written in Bela's perspective, but I found it to be more immersive because of it.

message 25: by Megan (new)

Megan Latulippe I bought this and read it the same day before realizing it was going to be a September read. I can't wait to see everyone's thoughts on it. very different narration then I'm used to but in a good way

I feel the same way. I've read enough of Malerman's books to know he doesn't work for me. But there are plenty of other authors I enjoy, so no loss.

I haven't enjoyed anything I've read by him yet either, sadly! I decided this one is probably going to be my final attempt with his writing.

Honestly, this may be one of the few of his I did like...

message 29: by Ina (new)

Ina I feel the same way Destiny. Hope you like the book but as for now I think I'm done with Malerman. His books never gets exciting.

I've heard a couple of people say they don't normally like his books but enjoyed this one, which is the only reason I'm giving it a go! Fingers crossed!

I'm sorry you can relate! :(

message 32: by Ina (new)

Ina It's ok, Destiny. At least I've tried. =)

message 33: by Erika (new)

Erika Good to see conversation about the varied feelings on this author's writing.

I'm even more intrigued now to see what I feel about it! I don't think I've ever read one of his books

︎𓆩Shawnee𓆪 So excited to read this!!

message 35: by Joy (new)

Joy I enjoyed Bird Box and Malorie. They were clever and frightening. I've been meaning to read other books by Malerman, but haven't gotten around to it. I started reading Incidents last night. It's not going well. As a general rule, I don't like kid narration. I'm not sure why I thought this would be different.

message 36: by Michael (new)

Michael J. My reservation at the local library has arrived. Happy to be joining you for this one. I agree that Malerman is not for everybody. I've read 4 or 5 of his novels, and his method of story-telling varies a bit for each one. So, if you read one of his novels and didn't like it, you may feel differently about another.

message 37: by Julian (new)

Julian Lorr I have struggled to find a copy of this. I am currently bidding for a copy on ebay! Fingers crossed. I haven't read any of this author before, but people tell me this book is seriously scary!

message 38: by Shamonn (new)

Shamonn Definitely ready to read this one!

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

This is one of the more frightening and unnerving books I read this year. Hope others enjoy it!

message 40: by Michelle (new)

Michelle I got this in audiobook first but couldn't get through the first chapter. Couldn't listen the narrator's child voice.
So I have it in physical copy now. Excited to read it :)

message 41: by Zain (last edited Aug 31, 2024 10:08AM) (new)

Zain Come on September 1st! 😄😱🫣

message 42: by Shelby (new)

Shelby This is on the top of my TBR pile so this couldn't have worked out any better!

message 43: by Michelle (new)

Michelle I started this yesterday and just finished chapter 17. It's a quick, easy read (I mean that in the best possible way). I wasn't sure if I would like it after the first couple of chapters, but it's really ramping up and I don't want to put it down!

message 44: by McKensi (new)

McKensi Ensminger Just finished this. I truly do not understand the hype.

message 45: by Joy (new)

Joy McKensi wrote: "Just finished this. I truly do not understand the hype."

I finished it last night. I didn't think the book was exceptional either. It was just okay. The monster was excellent. Other Mother was scary and hard to pin down.

I could have done without the parents. They were annoying. Why were they delivering confessional soliloquies in the middle of the night to their sleeping child? I'm guessing Malerman needed to dump some information on us?

message 46: by Debra (new)

Debra Sneddon I agree with McKenzi I do not get the hype. I’m about halfway through and the only creepiness I’m finding is that I’m listening on audible and that it’s spoken in a childlike voice is the reason. I’m trudging through though because I’m no quitter.

Michael J. Michelle wrote: "I got this in audiobook first but couldn't get through the first chapter. Couldn't listen the narrator's child voice.

Yeah, sometimes the narrators on audiobooks make the story even better. And, sometimes they mess it up because of the particular voice they use or their narration style.
Compliments to you for recognizing that and picking up the printed novel to give it another chance to win you over!

I wondered about that as well. Who gives lectures or advise to a sleeping child? . . . unless they are Scientologists. Malerman could have found some other way to get that info in. Maybe he just wanted to characterize that peculiar habit of theirs? (Not likely, me thinks).

message 49: by Michael (new)

Michael J. I'm only at page 41 . . . but I'm finding this plenty creepy. Not scaring me yet, but I did think about this book a little when I woke up at 2:30 a.m. . . but was able to get back to sleep.
That short short first chapter was a tight and clever piece of writing . . . foreshadowing and indicating the threat/danger right there in the final lines.
Just finished the chapter with the playground incident. Now, that is a real departure from stories like this. Wow.

message 50: by Emilija (new)

Emilija I'm a little more than half way through (I'm reading on my breaks at work) and it's quite a quick read. If I wasn't limiting it to my work book I'd have it done in a sitting since I want to keep turning pages to find out how it ends.

I'll say some spots were quite creepy so far, but nothing is downright scary for me yet, although reviews point to quite an ending.
