So the way I understand it is that (view spoiler)[Iðunn is dealing with the death of her sister by drowning. Iðunn's night walks are the product of some internal force--a split personality? a haunting?--that she identifies as her sister systematically destroying everything that Iðunn loves. Hence why it starts with the cats that Iðunn is so proud of befriending, and eventually moves to Iðunn's romantic partners. However, the one man that Iðunn's sister also dated is spared, adding credibility to the haunting theory--the sister is okay with breaking Iðunn's things but not her own. I also think that's why the location of the kills is so important; that's where the sister washed up after drowning. It's left open as to whether Iðunn was involved in her sister's death, but the ending where she walks into the ocean with the spirit of her sister makes me think she was. (hide spoiler)]

My take on this:

(view spoiler)[I took it as Iðunn’s sister (or the spirit of her) finally killing Iðunn, who finally gives in and submits. Iðunn talks lot about expectations of women and the things she has complied with because of it—work expectations, how the medical system treats her, her parents, etc., but as the younger sister it seems like a lot of that was focused on her sibling. She mentions how she still had a certain amount of freedom. The sister, Ingunn, seemed to embody those expectations—she was the one who went out and made friends, the one the parents loved the most and put their expectations into, the one Már was really in love with and keeps seeing and thinking of when he looks at Iðunn. When the sister died, the weight of what parents, society, partners etc. expect fell squarely on Iðunn. I felt like the spirit of the sister becomes the embodiment of all of those things and by the end Iðunn is worn down and broken by it, can’t escape it, and submits. That was my feeling upon putting it down. I should probably read it again with that in mind and see how it holds up. I think the cats fit in with this idea as well, but I’m not sure about Stéfan. This is such a good explanation, it makes a lot of sense: (view spoiler)[There are many clues in the book about the expectations of women and expectations of Iðunn from her family after her sister died (one example was that Iðunn wanted to be an architect, but Ingunn always wanted to be a CEO… and after her death, there was only one road open for Iðunn). It runs through the whole book and is actually quite sad when you think about it. Oh and I agree, the cats and Már fit perfectly into this theory, but Stéfan somehow doesn't fit. I haven't found a theory yet where he or his ending makes sense, but maybe I'm missing something. This is such a well written book, I can't stop thinking about it. (hide spoiler)]
