By design Jack Denton is a down on his luck writer, paid as a professional observer, who is at bay himself. After a life spent in careerism, everything is going wrong — his marriage, his kids hate him and he winds up getting fired from a job he once coveted. He’s hoping that a TV show — of all things — will offer some sort of redemption, like a lifeline thrown to a drowning man. He is an Everyman for our times, a witness to the rise of Trump and our own search for meaningful answers. The novel is a satire but with literary ambitions.
