The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan

The Eye of the World (Wheel of Time, #1) by Robert Jordan

I was going through my "read" list in my head and I'd forgotten about this series. So, as I clicked and star-rated the books, I felt the need to express my love of this epic adventure.

I read this book many years ago, so this review is, basically, from memory (with a few Google searches to spell names correctly and get technical thingy’s right).

This is the first in the series The Wheel of Time and is a story of a young man, Rand al'Thor, who embarks on an epic adventure when Trollacs, lead by Myddraal, evil minions of The Dark One, attack his village....

Here is the complete review.

Laura (Kyahgirl) Today I finished a fantasy book, Hunting, by Australian writer Andrea K. Höst

I wanted to point out this book because I really liked it and this author is not well known but really worth taking a look at. Her fantasy stories appeal to adults but can also be read and enjoyed by teens. I'm not 100% sure of the the correct order to do this so I'll put a link to my review at the end but also include the content below:

4.5/5; 5 stars; A

I loved this book. It was fun and interesting, well paced and unpredictable. I really like the way this author portrays young people as competent and resourceful in her books. I liked the main female character, Ash, very much. Her resolve to find her benefactor's murderer at the same time as hiding from her past, making a new life, not getting killed and saving all and sundry from harm, made her a very busy girl indeed. The addition of horses into any story always add an extra draw for me and I enjoyed the bits of the story that included Arnth and Cloud Cat.

One thing that the author did very well, was handle the hidden gender issue. I've read books before where a person is in permanent disguise as the other gender and the author gets all messed up on the pronouns. In this book, Ash was a female and since we, the readers, knew that, the author always referred to her in the proper gender. It was still perfectly clear that everyone else in the story thought of her as a male.

I sincerely hope that Andrea K. Host is going to write more stories in this world. She alluded to some interesting women back in Thornaster's home country, such as his mother and sister. I hope there will be more stories including them as well as the young mage they had found and were returning to her homeland.

Emelie I just posted a review of Cobweb Bride (Cobweb Bride Trilogy, #1) by Vera Nazarian .

Death has stopped to collect the souls of the dying. He is searching for his Cobweb Bride and until She is found Death will no longer take souls into his Kingdom, granting life immortality. The story follows plain Percy, the sickly Infanta Claire, Knights and peasant girls who in various ways and wishes seeks out Death.

Jim I read a lot of fantasy, but it's usually fairly standard stuff. The other day I stumbled across a wonderful departure, Bedtime Stories: A Collection of Erotic Fairy Tales by Jean Johnson. They're a hoot & yet thoughtful. They're all retellings of fairy tales, most are fantasies, but some are in an SF setting. My 4 star review is here:

I'd also say, I like how you saw the larger questions in the author's writing "Is it really a good idea to live forever?" I like that kind of deep insight.

Glad you noticed it. The book did wake interesting philosophical questions like that and one might tend to think that being immortal and unable to die is fun and good but tend to ignore the negatives which this book brings forward. I like books like that, that makes you think and are philosopher yet not difficult or hard to read.

Jim In another group, there was some conversation about Patricia A. McKillip & I realized I hadn't reviewed the 4 books I'd read. They're all 4 star reviews.

Instead of reading Riddle-Master: The Complete Trilogy as one book, I read all three individually & over a span of years when they first came out. I found that frustrating. As I mention in my reviews, if you're going to read any, you really need to read all 3. Here they are in order:
The Riddle-Master of Hed- http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Heir of Sea and Fire - http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Harpist in the Wind - http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

She also wrote The Forgotten Beasts of Eld, a good standalone fantasy. I could only give it a 3 star review here:

Good reviews on the Riddle-Master.

I like this part of your comment:

Come on! He's been chased, had friends & family threatened & people tortured & murdered. Grow a pair & take a few heads with satisfaction, dude! But no, he has to whine about it. Ugh.

LOL :)

Jim I just finished listening to The Doomfarers of Coramonde by Brian Daley. It was a better fantasy than I recalled. The reader didn't help it much, but he didn't completely turn me off. A couple of the characters crossed over from our world into a very good fantasy world. I really liked the characterization, too.

I liked this one and the sequel. Daley also wrote a sci-fi trilogy that I liked vey much Jinx on a Terran Inheritance.

message 28: by Jim (new)

Jim I liked the Jinx books too, Hugh. I was going to recommend 'Doomfarers' to you, but saw that you'd read it. I was a bit worried that Daley's writing wouldn't hold up over the years, but it did just fine. I'll see if the Jinx books are available as downloadable audio books.
