Hi. I'm the author and by today's much more liberal society, yes I guess they come off as somewhat petty. However, the main character Bessie, who was in part inspired by Grandmother Bond (nobody called her Grandma and I was quite afraid of her) was a great deal tougher than the woman you met in the novel. I had to REALLY scale her back, or the novel never would have been published. Women had to be really tough back then. Especially living through the Great Depression. And your good name was something that you guarded with your life. Thanks for reading and commenting.
