Hi Ted, I really appreciated your assessment of the current French strategy, geopolitics, and the military. They certainly are capable, well trained, and have a modern military. As for whether they'll reassert their former role as a colonial power or regional power, it's hard to say. One thing I've personally noticed is that French people tend to be cynical of any politician, especially nationalistic ones. It is very unlikely they'll elect a French version of Trump with making France great again. :) I could be wrong.
I’d like to think that Marine Le Pen will never be elected President of France, but with 41% in the 2022 elections, it’s hard to say it couldn’t happen. Either her, or someone else leading the National Rally (which I’ll always think of as the National Front.)
I don’t think France will reemerge soon as a colonial or even regional power outside the NATO framework. I do believe, though, that France would strongly resist an attempt by any country to seize French territory by force. Like, say, China trying to take over French Polynesia….
