Candida Pugh Making dogs into people seems to me a mistake. First, it denies dogs their specialness. As animals, their nature does intersect with some human characteristics, such as feeling love, sorrow, compassion, etc., but intersection doesn’t equate to a dog’s interior life being identical to that of humans. It isn’t a question of which species is superior—that’s (IMO) a misguided question. It’s far too general (and maybe banal) to lead to any relevant answer. “Superior” in this case has no definition. But to the question of anthropomorphic treatment of dogs, it could be that the epidemic of neurosis we seem to witness in dogs stems from the very habit of denying they are animals. Take saying goodbye. Prolonged leave taking creates anxiety in a dog. With no concept of time, to the dog all that fussing suggests something bad is happening,
