I was wondering on your thoughts on the whole Russia and Ukraine war that is going to happen. I belive Putin is going to do something.
The sad thing about this is that it never needed to happen. We see now the insanity of our State Department in thinking 1) that Russia would someday be a part of NATO, 2) That there was no need for a buffer zone between a part of the world that had many years of democracy and a part of the world that had none, 3) that Russia would just give up the only all weather port they had in Crimea, 4) that Russia would give NATO troops access to the Georgian Military Road over the Caucuses Mountains.Traditionally, Russia has been a triangle of three cities: Moscow, Minsk, and Kiev. I would not be surprised to see that tradition continue.
The only bargaining chip we have is Belarus. We could accept the partition of the Ukraine if Russia accepts democracy in Belarus. Regardless, that buffer zone needs to be established.

I don't think they want to be part of Russia. I find it all very worrisome .
Some do, some don't. There are many people who identify with Russia over Ukraine, especially in the east and in Crimea. It's a mess.

I guess all we can do is just wait and see what happens in Ukraine. Its all very complicated. I am eagerly awatiting for the January 6th Comittee public hearing.

Or Venezuela? Or Brazil? There's messes all over. People being people. Can't control them, can we? They'll do what they're gonna do, and we'll just have to pick a reaction to have.
By now, everyone has probably heard the dog whistle phrase, "Let's Go Brandon!" For those who have not, it's an alternate way of saying, "F*ck Joe Biden". Wikipedia sums up the origins: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let%27s...
I get that politicians of every persuasion have received their fair share of insults and taunts, for generations. But now a state politician (Arizona) is using the phrase in his TV ads (campaigning for an open Senate seat this fall). Does that not cross a boundary about not using the 7 words you can't use on public broadcast? I'm tempted to complain to the local TV affiliates, who don't seem to understand the origins, or what it really means.
Am I overreacting? Just yet another thing I need to let go of and screen out of the media chatter?
I admit, I'm really dreading this next election cycle. Just how deep can I stick my ostrich head into the sand?
I think politicians (and regular people) have been finding alternate ways of saying fuck you for years, this is just a more traceable version. I had seen reference to it somewhere recently and didn't understand it, so this explains things, thanks for sharing.

I sent an email to Dan Sullivan last year and ranted at him for not wearing a mask in the Senate and creating an unsafe environemnet for the staff. He never respnded.
Did you see that Neil G on the Supreme Court is refusing to wear a mask so Sonia Sotomayer is sitting in her chambers while the court is in session, because she has diabetes and she sits next to him on the bench. I was going to see if I could email him too.
I have also emailed Lisa and Dan about voting rights. Lisa responded. But Dan never has.
So yes reach out to the TV station.
There is this guy from Lousiana running for Senate Gary Chambers.

Re: Gary Chambers ad, featuring him smoking a blunt: Well, it's complicated. In general principle, I'm in favor of legalizing pot, on the grounds that its no more severe than drinking alcohol, or smoking regular cigarettes. However, I'm not sure that actually doing the activity, in an advertising video, is such a good idea or makes a strong case for legalization. How often do we see ads where the subject is drinking a beer, wine or liquor? How often are there ads where they're smoking regular cigarettes? Portrayal of the behavior is generally discouraged or perceived badly, and kept out of advertising. Obama was a cigarette smoker, and his campaign managers took great care to keep pictures of him doing it out of the media, as much as possible. But times are changing rapidly. Chambers smoking a blunt in a campaign ad in 2022? Not sure how well it will go over. Not sure I'd vote for him; I'd need to know more context. Not sure it rises to level of indecency to the point of complaining to the networks, though. Maybe just "unwise."

It a disturbing video of part of a public gathering of Nazi's spewing hate. There were a few incindents that happened there over the last weekend.
On a side note Rachel Maddow had on the head of the Irish Fisherman Fleet on her show the other day. Its sounds like the Russians have backed down.

I see Europe just openingup their borders, there are hoards of volunteers offering all kinds of assistance, like rides to places etc. I think this is all great.
Where was all this when the poor people of Syria were fleeing their country? They were met with violence and closed borders, do you remember the images of dead childeren on the beaches?
There are lots of people from Africa and India in Ukraine who go to school there. The Indian govt got a plane load of people out, they had all traveled to Romania and got flown out from there.
There was a young man from Nigeria who made the trek along with all the other people to Poland. He as not offered very much assistance along the way, people did not treat him well. When he got to the border in Poland, there was a person holding a sign offering rides to Warsaw, he was trying to get there to get the the Embassy. He was turned down for that ride and immediately the ride was given to a white person.
There is a double standard. And its shitty. If I could go I would help all the people of color I could because they are not getting the same kind of help that others are getting.

Here's the exact wording from an edict coming out of Nova Scotia, Canada (url: https://novascotia.ca/coronavirus/ale...) - the pdf of the notice can be found about 2/3rds of the way down the page. It is an effort by an authoritarian government to prevent protests against its fascist vaccine mandate. Many of us are concerned by the political Left's willingness to trample on our rights, all in the name of a "good cause."Especially troubling is the broadness of the rule that prohibits "encouraging" or "participating in the stopping or gathering of people" in support of causes that the political Left holds near and dear to its authoritarian heart.

I agree Putin does not care. About anyone. Except his own perceived greatness and we must consider the fallout.
I know this sounds pessimistic, but since my grandparents had to flee Ukraine in 1927 and I am familiar with the geopolitical history, as hurt and horrified as I am, I've been expecting this ever since the USSR quietly broke up.They weren't Slavic or Jewish and lived in the Russian speaking part of Ukraine, although they could get by in Ukrainian.
I really hope something can be done to stop the Russians from regaining Ukraine!!!
Unfortunately I agree, Karin. Ukraine's best chance to survive as an independent country was to be a neutral country, along with Georgia, and Belarus. That solution is probably past us now.

If we had agreed that Georgia and Ukraine would remain neutral, Putin might have agreed to help force out Lukashenko. This would have created buffer states between Russia and NATO except for the Baltic States.
Stan wrote: "Unfortunately I agree, Karin. Ukraine's best chance to survive as an independent country was to be a neutral country, along with Georgia, and Belarus. This goes back some years, when Ukrainians voted out a president who wanted to trade with Russia in order to trade with Europe and isn't just this one issue.
Karin wrote: "Stan wrote: "Unfortunately I agree, Karin. Ukraine's best chance to survive as an independent country was to be a neutral country, along with Georgia, and Belarus. We are getting our mail in ballots for the special election to fill Don Youngs seat in the House of Representives. This is a special vote and all registered voters will get a ballot in the mail. Also we have rank choiced voting (which I think is excititng) no primaries here. We have about 50 people on the ballot.
To paraphrase Ayn Rand: a Marxist / Socialist / Democratic Socialist government is always in a never-ending cycle of trying to come up with "fixes" for things it broke in the first place. Here's a fine recent exhibit (finance.yahoo.com/news/student-loan-f...). See blockquote from article below. The chilling language that equates "for-profit" with "predatory" shows how mis-informed the political Left is (Leftists are notorious for their struggles with basic economic axioms. I wonder if Twitter will ban the yahoo!finance account for "misinformation.").The cost of education has gone up so high and so fast because of 1 thing: it is the end result of decades of government meddling in the education industry.
Example: when I went back to school as an adult to start on a law degree in 2002, the financial aid director said to all of us prospective students, words to this effect: "Don't worry about the cost because the Federal government will subsidize up to $18,000 of school loans annually regardless of your personal financial situation". You can probably guess how the law school decided to set its price well north of $18,000; after all, they'll get their government-backed money.
Twenty years later, this questionable policy has created a "student loan crisis" and now the taxpayer is on the hook (along with $30 TRILLION amassed by poor leadership from the Left & the Right) because "loan forgiveness" only benefits the loanee (though Democrat leaders figure they'll get quite a few votes for it down the road). Taxpayers will never receive forgiveness.
Student loan forgiveness is 'up to the White House,' Federal Student Aid COO says
As President Joe Biden moves closer to canceling some student loan debt, the top federal student loan official said any forgiveness by the president would be additive to other reforms taking place.
"That's a decision that the White House will make," Federal Student Aid (FSA) Chief Operating Officer Richard Cordray told Yahoo Finance in an exclusive interview this week (video above) when asks about student loan forgiveness, later reiterating "it's up to the White House to make a judgement about that. At the same time, there's quite a few existing programs that provide for pieces, bits and pieces of loan forgiveness. And some of those bits and pieces are rather large."
The Biden-era Education Department (ED) has taken several actions — aside from extending the payment pause multiple times — to refine the unwieldy student loan system and erase debt. These include overhauling the troubled Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program for student loan borrowers in public service; erasing debt held by some students who were defrauded by a predatory for-profit college; discharging debt of totally and permanently disabled borrowers; and increasing scrutiny of student loan servicers.
One estimate is that 700,000 borrowers have seen more than $17 billion wiped away through various actions. An estimated 37 million borrowers haven't had to make payments on their loans during the payment pause, and no new interest has accrued.
The New York Fed recently found the payment pause has led to "an estimated $195 billion worth of waived payments through April 2022."
Homo Sapians have only invented four economic systems: Plunder, Capitalism, Socialism, and Charity. Everything else is a subset of these systems. Every culture, every great power was built on a combination these four systems.

Its a game changer for sure. I am just shocked and horrified. My mother left my abusive father back in the early 70's and discovered that she was pregnant. She had to go from Michigan to New York to obtain an abortion. They showed how far a woman in Lousinana and Florida would have to travel to obtain a safe abortion , over 600 miles. Some years ago one of the young women that worked with me came to me for help. She was pregnant , already had a small child and was in the middle of leaving her husband. I gave her the money so she could obtain an abortion safely.
This has been my nightmare that we lose the right over our own body. Its just fucjked up. Thats all.
