I read this book about 10 years or so ago, so I don't remember what the cover looks like, and I can't be certain I'm not blending two different books. But, what I do remember is::
It starts out with an orphaned girl and her baby (2ish) brother. The boy has a backpack that is his security blanket. They eventually cross paths with an older woman who wants to take care of them, but the girl refuses, although she does leave her brother with her in the end. At some point, years later, the girl-now a young woman- breaks into a store to steal food and finds herself caught in the middle of a fight between a demon and a vampire(?) She slips on blood and gets hurt. The vampire(?) tends to her wound, and she gets away. Later, they meet up again, but I can't be sure if it's around here that I'm blending books, so I'll stop here. If anyone can find this book, that would be amazing. I've been looking forever!
