Ireen Blaming BIPOC authors for your inability to get published is misguided. Publishing isn't easy for anyone, *especially* for them. Craft aside, no publishing professional would want to work with you if they saw this attitude from you. It's not a good look. Be respectful, it's free.

Booked Up Beyond All Recognition It sounds like you want Nathaniel to add the word "bitter" to his otherwise accurate description of you

message 3: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Aethra The fact that white women profit the most from DEI — you might hold an MFA but you're the biggest example of how holding a degree isn't the marker of a person's abilities and their education, considering you don't understand how DEI works. Publishing isn't easy for ANYONE, and but considering your attitude and illiteracy on political issues, no publisher would want to work with you. And putting your bigotry on the internet for everyone to see? Another clown move from you. DEI doesn't mean publishers/employers HAVE to publish inclusive books/hire diverse employees, it only means they can't DISCRIMINATE against someone for their race, gender, sexuality, disabilities, etc. Instead of leaving this vile comment here, you could've perhaps done a bit of research into how DEI works. We're mad because on top of being a bigot, you have no clue how things work.

I'm not reading all that, but I know what I'm talking about. God forbid I speak truthfully about how things are from my perspective.

Jessica J. Finn wrote: "Jessica wrote: "Depending on the study you look at, 75-90% of books published by the big publishing houses are white men. Maybe you just need to accept that you're not good enough instead of being ..."

It's exceptionally easy to Google just how white publishing is.

"According to the Pew Research Center, approximately 81% of authors published in 2022 identified as white."

The New York Times published the 90% figure in a story in 2020 titled "Just How White is the Book Industry." Even if you argue that this out of date, Lee and Low reports on diversity in the industry evey four years, the most recent one released in December 2023. According to Publishers Weekly, Penguin Random House reported that "White contributors accounted for 76% of books released in the 2019-2021 period, significantly higher than the 60% white people comprise in the U.S. general population. "

But none of this matters because you've made it clear you're not going to, in good faith, read anything that forces you to acknowledge that you are just a racist twat whose inability to publish a book is because you are a mediocre writer.

Your turn. Give me some hard data that you are not getting published because you are a white man.

message 6: by Jessica (new)

Jessica J. I will point out that I made a typo in my initial comment and said that 75-90% of books are published by white men. I meant white authors and I corrected my mistake. Because I am capable of recognizing and owning up to things when I get them wrong.

Good luck. It's called free speech! No slurs to be found, only two words that spell out the truth of the rot in the publishing industry!

You self-pubbed, so this really doesn't apply to you, does it.

message 10: by Andie (new)

Andie M Go read some more instead of spewing hate, your ignorance is showing. 👋🏼

Maybe you should self pub so your dreams won’t be in the hands of an industry you clearly don’t believe in, then you’d be less bitter :)

I have an agented ms on sub for several months—by your logic I should immediately have a seven figure book deal and be rolling in cash, but that isn’t the case now is it.

message 12: by Inanna (new)

Inanna Ireen self published and, through perseverance and consistent work, has managed to gain a huge following on social media who admire her writing and illustrations. She’s an auto-buy author for me and many others. This proves that despite not being white Caucasian and not being a man, she has the talent and skill to be a successful author. I‘m sure Katrina Kwan has also put hard work into publishing.

Don‘t excuse your obvious racism with alleged unfair treatment in the publishing industry. If you don’t put in the work, you can’t expect results. Having a MFA doesn’t automatically make your writing and your marketing skills good. Perhaps your writing lacks empathy and the agents and publishers didn’t feel a connection to your story.

message 13: by K.M (new)

K.M McCannell Found the smallest man who ever lived! Blaming others rather than taking accountability. Sounds like an unhelpful, disgruntled man, child.

message 14: by Blake (new)

Blake Seeger Mam. Your attitude is not needed in this peaceful place. Also, your lack of knowledge regarding DEI is very telling.

message 15: by Maureen (new)

Maureen McSherry Lmao you really thought people would agree with you over this? Get over yourself

message 16: by Kiersten (new)

Kiersten Michele The book is Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive? That sounds amazing to me…

message 17: by Libbie (new)

Libbie Your hate review made me add this book to my tbr. Might start actively avoiding authors called Finn on the off-chance your racist self gets published

message 18: by K (new)

K Mora Damn. You got a masters in writing yet you still cant get published? Have you maybe tried writing idk good stories?? Anyway, with your attitude, I hope you never get published.

message 19: by Effie (new)

Effie Stock If you really don't like books with DEI... why would you go out of your way to interact with a book including DEI?? Disagreeing with a book's content is one thing, but leaving a review and rating like this is absolutely a choice and downright hateful

message 20: by May (new)

May Oh boohoo. “I had an MFA and couldn’t get published”. Hey maybe consider that your books just, you know, suck?? Lololol! What a hard concept to wrap your head around isn’t it? Because I still see a lot of white authors getting published. Publishers publish what ACTUALLY SELLS. And yours simply will not. Hope that helps!

Finn Kiersten wrote: "The book is Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive? That sounds amazing to me…"

Sounds like performative activism to me.

Excuuuuse me for wanting books to actually be good and published based on merit.

OOoh yes because I would totally make the mistake of using my real name on a social media website, Liberty Dean.

I've read this other author's work. It drivel trash. I don't expect any better of any of her future books. This is me being pre-emptive.

Judging by your bookstagram, I can see why you're coming to bat for this author despite her obvious lack of talent. You fetishize Asian stories (manhwa, danmei). I'm sure this book will be right up your alley.

message 26: by May (new)

May Oh Finn, you thought you ate. Now I know why you can’t get published. Your observation skill is severely lacking. If you already stalked me then you should’ve known that I’m an Asian. “You fetishize Asian stories”. Oh what a wild thing for a person to read and enjoy what they grew up reading 😭 But hey follow & drop me some likes to while you are at it. We have really good stories that you can probably learn a thing or two.

message 27: by Angelica (new)
