I suspect what you're identifying as errors in tenses are in fact present tense internal dialogue comments (Amber talking to herself), which I use on the basis that most dialogue is in the present tense, in books where the narrative is past tense. It's quirky, but I would defend my choice. If you show me errors, I will fix them!
