Nancy Oakes Something a bit different: please nominate any historical mystery/crime/thriller/true crime book for April's group reads. I have a couple of links with some ideas if you can't think of anything:

https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
https://www.goodreads.com/genres/hist...

the usual:
One nomination of one book per person
Do NOT nominate your own book
Please check the group's bookshelf to make sure we haven't read it in the last three years:
https://www.goodreads.com/group/books...
If your book wins the vote in the poll, you will be the discussion leader.

Have fun!

Scarlotte Eric Ambler -Skytip. I’ve not read any by this author but saw how prolific and influential he was so I’d love to start this with other readers.

Books Amongst Friends The Hunger by Alma Katsu

Tiffi0214 I always want to recommend a book but know I don’t have the time to lead the discussion :(

Julie The Rose Arbor, by Rhys Bowen (WWII).

Judy Sheluk I'm not sure if this qualifies. I've had this book on my bookshelf for a couple of years and have not yet read it, but Kate Morton's books are always solid and it was a GR Best nominee in 2023.
The book alternates between 1959 and 2018. Homecoming: A Sweeping, Intergenerational Epic From the Multi-Million-Copy Bestselling Author

It looks like a post-WWII novel so it works. I've never heard of that one until today, likely because it was originally published under a pseudonym.

That totally works. I might pick up a copy even if it's not chosen!

to be really honest, I'm not quite sure I'd call that one a mystery/crime/thriller novel ... definitely more of an historical horror novel.

message 11: by David (new)

David Stewart I would like to nominate Echoes of Vengeance by Aidan Blackwood. It's on my to be read list and looks like a gripping read

message 16: by Sof (new)

Sof things we do in the dark by jennifer hillier

Valerie Book Valkyrie Here's a nomination for The Girl on the Train

message 18: by Kim (new)

Kim Kaso I am slowly working my way through all of Eric Ambler’s works, have read a significant number of them by now. I like that he was contemporary with events of the time, and was very prescient & cleat-eyed about them. His writing is sharp & elegant. A Coffin for Dimitrios is an excellent book for getting to know him and his style.

Rain If You Tell by Gregg Olsen

I don't think 2015/16 can be considered historical. But maybe I misunderstood the criteria. It's a great book.

message 22: by Heather Rae (new)

Heather Rae Brandt I nominate a new one that just came out!
9-1-1 by DJ Maughan

This one is set during the 911 twin towers and is scary to think it could actually have happened! Tons of twists a turns!

You're right. I was not going to put it on the poll.

Nancy Oakes I'll be back with a recap later this afternoon, then the poll after that.

Oh, sorry. I got wrapped up in what I was doing yesterday, so here's the list of what's going to today's poll:

1. Skytip by Eric Ambler
2. The Rose Arbor by Rhys Bowen
3. Homecoming by Kate Morton
4. We Carry Their Bones: The Search for Justice at the Dozier School for Boys by Erin Kimmerle
5. Things We Do in the Dark by Jennifer Hillier
6. If You Tell: A True Story of Murder, Family Secrets, and the Unbreakable Bond of Sisterhood by Gregg Olsen
7. 9-1-1: A Peter Andrassy crime thriller by DJ Maughan
8. Eye of the Needle by Ken Follett
9. Echoes of Vengeance by Adam Blackwood
10. Needless Alley by Natalie Marlow.

notes:
*The group has read The Shadow of the Wind twice, the last time two years ago, so it won't be going to the poll

*The Door-to-Door Bookstore doesn't sound at all like a mystery/crime/thriller sort of thing so I'm not adding it.

* I am adding Needless Alley to the poll, but just keep in mind that here in the US it may be difficult to find a copy of the book.
