I was born in Middlesbrough (Orchard Road, (near the art college) way back in 1961. And yes, I thought this writer’s comments about Middlesbrough in this mess of a novel were totally uncalled for. Her writing has deteriorated markedly since Behind the Scenes, she comes over as extremely smug and self satisfied. And yes, she does t have to keep reminding the reader how much she despises Margaret Thatcher and Brexit - a true lovely, polishing her left-wing credentials to keep in with her publishers and the BBC….

After this novel I've avoided her books. as has my 94 year old , Whinney Banks (M'bro) born Mum. Us Boro lasses need to stand against this kind of negative and trite image of our home town . It was good to see this charity set up recently to counteract bad press about the town (The Rubies Charity) My son starts at the Northern School of Art in Sept ,an outstanding (3 times) establishment , a credit to the town . We stand proud of our roots .
