Arin (Wise_Girl_On_Fire) This is my AARP grandparent of the year essay! (I got first at my school and first in my county! We don't know about state yet.)

Ain’t No Nana Like the One I’ve Got!
By: Arin

Do you know someone who makes you laugh, always makes you smile, and talks your head off? I definitely do! Someone who really means a lot to me is my Nana, Ann. People say I am her twin, and we act just alike. Some even say, “As long as you’re alive, she will be, too.” She’s the best Nana in the whole wide world for so many reasons, like calling every night, asking for updates about my piano lessons every Tuesday, and always being there for me no matter what.

Nana is very kind and caring. She always asks, “How is so and so doing today?” when we go visit her. One of Nana’s favorite things to do is crochet. People bring her yarn, and in return, she crochets people hats, scarfs, blankets, and so much more. She loves making stuff for the residents where she lives and for the nurses who take care of her. When I see her do this, it makes me want to do something kind, too.

Nana has taught me several things, but my favorite has been when she taught me how to make fudge, her signature dessert. With her New York accent, she told us how to make this delicious dish. She always asks to pray before we eat it and makes me smile when she prays, “God is good. God is great. Thank Him for our fudge, Amen.” She also tells me to “ Never give up!” especially when I get frustrated playing the piano. She says you’re doing a great job. You just need to keep going. This helps me to learn to be patient and lots of other good lessons.

Nana calls us every night to ask how our days have been. She asks us to come over and help her decorate her room for all of the holidays, too. She also comes over to our house every holiday. On Sunday, we all pile up in the back of the car and drive to church. Whenever Nana walks through the door, so many people come say, “Hi, it's nice to see you today, Ms. Ann!” My Nana is the type of person who can make you laugh, even when you're going through a hard time. When we say, “I’ll see you soon, Nana!” She’ll say, “Turn around and you can see me now!” This definitely makes me smile!

My Nana is kind, caring, wise, thoughtful, funny, and so much more. She’s my best friend. She’s super special in a lot of ways, and I really love her. As Arin , a proud student, I can say I am proud to be her granddaughter. Nana is a blessing to me and my family. She calls me, “Little Munch” and that’s a name I will always love to be called and hear her say.

✨Grace✨(JESUS FREAK) That is so sweet! 🙌❤️ I love it 🥰

Timothy That AARP letter is so moving, Arin. It’s cool as it goes on that you find your Nana living in an assisted living facility of some sort. I know of a few folks that need round the clock care, and it can be especially helpful to have family like you visit so often!

Well done 😎👍
