I can relate to a lot of what you've said here. The fugue-like passage starting on p. 274 is extraordinary, but what you call the "lattice" of the book is certainl hard to parse. When I first finished reading the book, I too thought "I'll never pick it up again". But then a little idea popped into my head, and I did pick it up again, and again, and again — and I now realise my initial reading of the book was hopelessly inadequate. I can't link here to what I've now written at length about this novel (it's verboten) but if you check out my own brief Goodreads review of this novel, you'll find a link if you're interested.
