AJ You can take a look at the June Bookclub read. The book of the month was When the moon hatched.
I personally didn’t like it all that much, but others did. So you have a couple different opinions in the thread :)

SC I just finished it this morning. I liked it ok, but if I misread and thought the next book came out THIS October. Wrong, it’s 2025 release and wow that just feels like a long time between releases? I’d have probably not read it yet had I realized that, there’s other great romantasy genre books with sequels coming out in the next few months.

Overall, the first half of the book you learn about Raeve, who is the main character with occasional perspective changes to two other characters. Raeve is very mysterious in that you learn pretty quickly you can’t always trust her perspective, she has a lot of secrets. The storyline is a little chaotic and hard to follow. There were some intense scenes that were missing details that felt important to me (in one part, Raeve apparently sprints away from someone and hides, in the next breath they are right by her but never chased her or apparently found her?) it was difficult to follow, and I thought it was just me—I have a toddler, my reading time is often interrupted— but I went back and reread some of my trouble spots and was still confused.

SC (Continued)

Overall, I thought the way the book ended is where I finally was understanding the story. Maybe it’s called world building— I’m no expert— but we’ve seen other authors build compelling worlds in a lot fewer pages and with more clarity. My recommendation is wait for book 2 to come out before you read this and it will be a fun adventure.

Brooke Ackerman okay thank you guys! i probably will wait to read it then because i hate waiting so long until the new book comes out i feel like i forget half of what i read

Harper Voss I just finished it and I’m kind of torn. I wanted to love Raeve, but I never fully clicked with her. That said, the elemental magic and adventure were cool, and I can see why it’s getting so much hype. Curious what others thought—did it get better for you as it went on?

Eliza Oh I loved it from the beginning but I can totally see how people would find it boring. I thought Parker wrote beautifully. I easily became attached to characters. I normally am not a crier but that book had me. I know a lot of people find it confusing for a good portion of the book. Maybe I saw how things were probably connected sooner than other readers 🤷‍♀️ as it didn’t seem to take too long for things to start piecing a bit together to me. Though you have to wait for things to be clarified.

Book 2 was supposed to come out this year but yes, it got pushed back a little. I plan on reading it again before book two. It definitely ends on quite the reveal.

Jeliza I absolutely LOVED this book. I thought the way Sarah wrote the book was so beautiful. I loved the world and the magic systems. I mean I don’t remember ever being super confused even from the beginning. I thought I would use the glossary but didn’t really need it as the booked answered it for me most of the time. The MMC is one of my top favourites. I think a lot was pretty predictable but I seriously just loved it so much. And I will be happy to do a reread before the next book. It felt dark, unique, layered and just enchanting. Right from the beginning it grabbed my heart and didn’t let go.

Robyn I found this book few on me as it went along. I also didn’t feel great connection to the characters until close to the end. But I think that’s a reflection of the detail of the world building and description in the book and I’m hoping it becomes more reflective and personal in the sequel.
I liked where it’s headed so will definitely read the next book.
I too made the mistake of seeing it was part of a 2-part series and got caught out that book 2 is unpublished - urgh! But not too long to wait at least.

Jennifer One of my favourite books of ALL time! Predictable at times, but I loved the FMC's personality, and the layered plot. It's the first book I'd read where when I finished it I IMMEDIATELY wanted to read it all over again.
