Allison Hurd Well friends, it took almost 11 years, but it seems like we've finally broke the original introduction thread.

If you said hello and didn't get a welcome, please post again! We're so glad you're here!

Here is the first post ever from our founder, Nick, for old time's sake:

I was born May 24, 1979 in Logan, WV. Until the age of 15 I lived in Mingo County, WV near Delbarton when I moved to Swansboro, NC with my mother due to my parents divorce. I graduated in 1997 from West Carteret High School. I worked afterwards as an assistant manager of an Eckerd Drugstore, general manager of a Carmike Cinema and then as an advanced technician for Volaris Online (formerly Coastalnet and Duro Communications). In 2001 I moved to Wheeling, WV to be closer to family and due to meeting my future wife here Lisa. On July 4, 2003 I married her. Currently I am attending West Liberty State College toward a double major in Social Science and English for a Secondary Education degree.

This year I've read these books, in no particular order:

The Stand
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
A Wizard of Earthsea
The Eyre Affair
Moby Dick
Scarlet Letter
Namesake
The Awakening
Their Eyes Were Watching God
The Samurai's Garden
Desert Flower
The Bluest Eye
The Kite Runner
Drawing of the Three
The Wastelands
Wizards and Glass
On Writing (second time)
Gateway
The Tomb
Legacies
Conspiracies
All the Rage
Native Son
The Bean Trees
Unquiet Earth

as well as some more that I can't remember. I'd love to discuss them if you'd like!

Cheryl Aww....
I never met Nick, as I joined only a few years ago... too bad.
I'm intrigued by his list; it includes a lot of non-SF.

Great group! Welcome to both 'gold' old friends and new 'silver' friends, if you'll pardon the paraphrase!

message 3: by Anna (new)

Anna The old thread is still there if someone feels like reading through all of it! :D

Adrian Maudling HI my name is Adrian but I answer to Ade, Adie, A or anything really.
I was originally from London but now reside in Norfolk.
I love Fantasy and Science Fiction and I am an honorary geek and newbie Cosplayer
Over the years I played self created modern fantasy games based around D&D rules and realised we were creating stories each time we played.
I eventually decided to tweak the stories and characters to make a hopefully readable story and my first book is out Friday
if you want to know more or just chat then give me a shout
Happy reading everyone ( and Happy Christmas as it's getting closer and has invaded everywhere.)

message 5: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Welcome, Adrian!

Lots of nerds of various stripes around here! I say this lovingly, as I am definitely in the thick of things with my broadsword and my Bunsen burners!

Hope you get to talk books with us!!

message 6: by Tomas (new)

Tomas Grizzly If you forgive me a slight detour, how many posts did it take to break the previous thread?

Allison Hurd Tomas wrote: "If you forgive me a slight detour, how many posts did it take to break the previous thread?"

7001 was the last post. I've gotten several notifications, and perhaps they were all spammers who were deleted, but that would have been like 5 people in a row. Sorry new people! It's not that I don't want you here! I can't see what you wrote!

message 8: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Maudling Thanks Allison, although now I'm thinking of ways to attach the Bunsen burners to the broadsword . That might be an idea in my next book lok

message 9: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd "Forged in the mythic Bunsen burners of Chemlabaria, behold, The Desiccator."

message 10: by ForestRage (new)

ForestRage ForestRage Truthfully, this is my first time on Goodreads. I actually joined today. I am a simple farmer living on an island with a dream. To write a book. Well, I have just done it, and placed it on Amazon. I think I can cross this off my bucket list. ;)
I'm not one to talk much online, but I do love a good book. I grew up on fantasy stories ranging from Lord of the Rings to A Tale of Two Cities. The latter I must admit had been forced on me by my School. I still consider it a great book.

This group seemed interesting, considering the topics suit my taste. I hope to gain some great ideas here. Thanks for having me!

message 11: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Welcome ForestRage! We love talking about what we're reading, hope to hear from you!

message 12: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd We boldly went where no one should have gone! But that's okay, it worked out ;-)

message 13: by Joon (new)

Joon I haven't used GR for a couple years or so, and I've been a poor reader the last couple years as well, but I'm determined to turn things around in 2019; I've started getting into audiobooks to motivate me to walk every day, and that's helped get me back into reading in general.

I'll also come up with a better username on this site, I know mine's impractical right now XD

message 14: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Welcome M! We love reading related goals in this group! In about a week we'll be posting the challenges for 2019--perhaps one or more of them will appeal to you! I also have been enjoying audiobooks--they make tedious tasks so much more enjoyable :)

Hope to hear more from you, glad you're with us!

message 15: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl I remember doing my reread of The Host on audio while walking. My walks did get longer and longer because I didn't want each session to end... and then the book ended and I don't walk nearly enough anymore! I need to get back into combining those two good habits. :)

message 16: by Joon (new)

Joon Cheryl wrote: "I remember doing my reread of The Host on audio while walking. My walks did get longer and longer because I didn't want each session to end... and then the book ended and I don't wal..."

Somehow the time goes by faster listening to audiobooks than music. If I were listening to music, I'd get super bored and my walks would end quickly.

message 17: by Leila (new)

Leila Hey, my name is Leila. I recently joined Goodreads, mainly to track books that I have read and organizing my reading experience. My account and things on here are far from complete but I have lots of other things to do (I hate having a life aside from reading). This is my first group and I'm very excited to join. Hope to have some amazing discussions, challenges and/or buddy reads with you all!

message 18: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Welcome, Leila! We're excited to have you! We're starting challenges, so perfect time!

message 19: by Jo (new)

Jo Sé Hello all, I’m José! I decided to join this group as obviously as Sci-fi is my favourite genre and I really like the idea of group rereads, especially as the first I’ll get to take part in is for a book that is a personal favourite, Consider Phlebas. Hopefully I’ll be able to offer something to the group and contribute some kind of insight.

Pleased to meet everyone, may every book you read have ever increasing quality storylines 😊

message 20: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Aw, thank you José! Welcome! I hope we'll desert thi hear your thoughts on Consider Phlebas and many more! 😃

message 21: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Sigh. *hope we will get to hear your thoughts

message 22: by Rachael (new)

Rachael Dunn Hey everyone, I'm Rachael. I've been on Goodreads for years but I never got around to joining a group until just now. I look forward to talking about SFF books with people who genuinely love them.

message 23: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Welcome Rachael! Excited to talk books with you!

message 24: by Helen (new)

Helen Hey everyone! My name's Helen and I'm 25 and living in England.

I've always loved reading Sci Fi and Fantasy books since i was a kid. I've only been using Good Reads for just over a year, and one of my New Year's resolutions is to keep using it and to read 50 books this year. Another one is to join a book club, and this one seems like a perfect one for me!

I'd love to use this group to get to make some friends, broaden my reading choices and get in some great discussions.

Merry Christmas everyone! :)

message 25: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Merry Christmas! Welcome! What a great goal, I hope we can help you achieve it! Looking forward to chatting about books!

message 26: by Airbender (new)

Airbender Heya.

I've always loved SF and fantasy fiction. When I was very young, I read a lot of Brian Jacques and Star Wars EU books. I've been reading for years since then, and I'm now familiar with the work of popular writers in the field, like Hobb, Abercrombie, Martin, Tolkien, Herbert, Lynch and so on. My favourites in the field are probably Clarke's 'Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell', Herbert's 'Dune' and a fair amount of Robin Hobb's work. (I also like Tolkien, like many fantasy fans.)

Good to meet you all!

message 27: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Ooo, Airbender you are in good company here! Several group members are doing a full series read for Hobb and we're talking about a read of Jonathan Strange (both authors being in our group shelf, too!)

I hope you find lots of books to love with us!

message 28: by Kim (new)

Kim Tusscher Hello everybody!

I'm Kim. I'm from the Netherlands and I have a love for everything fantasy. I started of as a reader, after a while costume making was added and about ten years ago I started writing.

I love stories with amazing characters, 'heros' who have flaws and 'villains' who I can admire. I love huge worlds, but don't like series that take me 12000 pages or more to read the whole story. Just give me trilogies set in the same world and I'm a very happy reader ;-) .

I've been on Goodreads for a while, but didn't really understand how it all worked. So it's time to figure that out and be a little bit more active. This group seemed like the right place to start.

Writers who's stories I really love are:
Robin Hobb
Michael J. Sullivan
Stephen King
Kelly van der Laan
J. Sharpe

And I do have a lot of books by awesome illustrators. Some of my favorites:
Benjamin Lacombe
Iris Compiet
Nicoletta Ceccoli

It would be nice to get to know this group.
Happy hollidays!
Kim

message 29: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Welcome, Kim! Perfect timing! Next year's "To Be Read" challenge focuses a bit on art so maybe you'll have lots of good ideas or suggestions for others! Looking forward to talking books with you, happy holidays!

message 30: by Filip (new)

Filip Forsberg Hi, I'm Filip from Sweden and I'm a sucker for sci-fi and techno-thrillers. Still remember when I read Tom Clancys Red Storm Rising during a vacation with my family when I was young. That book gave me the inspiration/drive to someday become an author myself. And now, twenty-five years later, I'm proud to say that I am. Just finished the second part in a sci-fi series and has just started working on the third.

Very nice to be here and I look forward to making your acquaintance.
Regards,
/Filip

Allison Hurd Welcome, Filip!

message 32: by Valentina (new)

Valentina Hi everyone, I'm Valentina from Italy and I'm a fantasy/horror/sci-fi/comic book lover with a TBR list longer than Rapunzel's hair. I started with my father's Urania (a famous sci-fi book series here) and my mother's mythology and fantasy book as soon as I learned to read and now I'm planning how to better incorporate my own shelves in my house.

I've recently decided to try to do monthly reads and challenges because why not, and I really look forward to chat and learn from fellow book lovers! Nice to meet you!

message 33: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Woo!!! That's the spirit Valentina, jump right in! Glad to have you! I hope you find the upcoming reads to be interesting. We'll be voting on more soon, so come help us pick February's books!

message 34: by Valentina (new)

Valentina Thank youuu! I’ve already bought the Loki one and the other seems sooo interesting too! I bet february is going to be pretty awesome too!

message 35: by Dave (new)

Dave Howdy All, I'm Dave. I had a good year with reading in 2018. The Gospel of Loki looks very interesting and I look forward to it! Thanks for the book selection!

message 36: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Hey there, Dave! Glad you're jumping in! I'm enjoying Gospel of Loki so far (don't tell the others I'm sort of jumping the gun!) I can't wait to hear what you think :D

message 37: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar Hi, I'm Tamara. I just joined the group. I'm a retired retired English professor who grew up in England and who has lived in the U.S. for the last 40 years.

I'm an avid reader and author. I love reading about and writing fantasy books with a mythology bent. I saw your January reading is The Gospel of Loki. I look forward to reading the book with the group and joining the discussion.

Thanks.

message 38: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Welcome Tamara! I also love mythology-based books :) Looking forward to your thoughts on Gospel of Loki!

Tamara Agha-Jaffar Allison wrote: "Welcome Tamara! I also love mythology-based books :) Looking forward to your thoughts on Gospel of Loki!"

Thanks, Allison.
I've been on goodreads for a couple of years, but I'm still learning to navigate my way around. I've only just found you. I'm excited to be here and to find kindred spirits who love mythology-based books.

message 40: by Deanna (new)

Deanna Hello everyone.

I am an avid Sci-fi, mystery, mythology book reader whom is looking for more recommendations and friends. Despite my work schedule I will try my best in reading challenges and the monthly reads too.

Deanna

message 41: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Welcome Deanna! We have lots of myths on our shelf and so many friends here! You came to the right place!

message 42: by John (new)

John Hello all!! My names John. I’m 35yo from Bowling Green Ky. Been an avid reader now for about 8 years. My favorites are the entire Harry Potter series, Game of Thrones series, and Lord of the Ring series.

message 43: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Fantastic choices, welcome! Hope we can help you add to that list 🙂

message 44: by Jem (new)

Jem Hi everyone! I'm Jessica, or Jem for short. I've been on goodreads a while now but haven't joined a group 'til now. I've been a fantasy lover since birth and I suffer from the awful habit of binge-reading at four in the morning (my most recent accomplishment was polishing off a re-read of the three Stormlight Archive books in under a week). Besides Sanderson's iconic works, my favourites are the Gentlemen Bastard series, The Band, anything by Mark Lawrence or John Gwynne, Saga, and Gaiman's The Sandman. Madeline Miller and Katherine Arden are also on my insta-buy list.

I don't know too many fantasy mega-fans in real life, so I look forward to meeting people with a similar passion to me :) Cheers

message 45: by Rody Reads (new)

Rody Reads Hello everyone! I'm Rody. I've been on goodreads for a while but only really started using it recently to better track my thoughts on books I've read. This is the first time I join a book club and I'm excited to read and discuss some SFF with you!

I enjoy reading all sorts of different genres (except romance, perhaps) but lately I've found myself craving sci-fi and wanting to learn more about the genre and discover more novels. I thought a good way to go about that would be to join a book club! That way I can have a reading list and learn from SFF fans :) And I'm looking forward to it!

message 46: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Welcome Jem! I've been there on that Stormlight Archive reread. Props!! Hope you'll find more reasons to stay up waaaay too late here!

Hey Rody! Well that sounds logical to me! We are starting with a SFWA author in 2019, I hope you'll join us for Catseye!

message 47: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Hey everyone! Over the years, I've tried to read a variety of books, but I have finally come to terms that I will always prefer fantasy books over everything else lol I haven't read much in the sic-fi genre, but I'm intrigued enough by it that I want to read more from the genre.

I was born and raised in Iowa, but currently live in Southern California. I just started a new job as an employment specialist to help people with severe and/or persistent mental illnesses in finding a meaningful activity (which could be volunteering, employment, education, etc.). I've only been working there for a month so far, but I'm absolutely loving it. My biggest problem is that I don't have any other friends that are as nerdy about fantasy books as I am, so I have no one to talk about my love of fantasy. I'm hoping that this group will help fill that gap in my life at the moment :)

message 48: by Vaughn (last edited Dec 31, 2018 01:38PM) (new)

Vaughn Edward Hello!

I'm Vaughn, a Vocalist/Musician and Fantasy novel Author. I was born and raised in the Midwest and moved around the country, performing music. I've lived in St. Louis, Chicago, Seattle, The Triangle in NC, Dallas, Orlando, and the Bay Area in Cali.

Goodreads is still very foreign to me (and confusing, haha), but I am branching out and trying to learn all the facets of this site, as well as connect with as many people as I can ^_^

I don't read as much as I used to, mainly because I am too busy writing my own stuff now. But I used to read about 75 books a year. Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, The Dune Series by Frank Herbert, Eragon Series by Christopher Paolini, Sword of Truth Series by Terry Goodkind, and much, much more ^_^

I've written two Fantasy novels, and I've written two music books.

Say hi, and let's be friends ^_^ and anyone with good advice on how to maneuver this site, I will bless you with Happy Thoughts :))

message 49: by Allison (new)

Allison Hurd Welcome, Vaughan! Looking forward to talking with you about the books you do have time to read! For us, the best places to start are everything you need to know and current events.
