The rhythm of the words! You get it! Like music! I’ve tried to explain this and failed, as well. It’s a relief to see it so well described.

I'm 16% in and this sums up pretty perfectly how I'm feeling. I thought this was a debut novel, but Feo has been writing for more than 25 years. A debut novel or a novel that copied the good parts of other books and then struggled when they had to write their own bits to connect things (I'm not saying he did this, but that's how disconnected it's feeling to me. To your point on rhythm, it's very jarring).
It's interesting that mention short stories because that's what most of his work has been. I agree, I think a work of interconnected short stories would have gone over much better for Feo. Or he needed a different editor to help elevate pieces.
