Okay, party people. I'm looking at doing a fun serialized parody, and I need your help. What's the dumbest reason you can imagine for the collapse of society, which the prepper main character for some reason anticipated? An idea I had was that he's an economist who's predicted some obscure monetary policy crisis, an event for which he has spent his whole life preparing.

This is a fun idea but I can't seem to think of anything at the moment!

The prepper totally ready for the big thing, then discovers it is a plague that makes people unable to eat meat. So he has to gag over plants...

A rogue nation, with sleeper agents all over the US, contaminates our water supply with viagra... Society collapses, well except for the brothels...

Haha I'd be a winner in this scenario!

Prepping all your life for nuclear war -- bomb shelter, canned goods, iodine tablets, Geiger counter and a box of fresh batteries for it in the freezer -- then finding out the real disaster is violent weather and you should have invested in an armor-plated car that screws itself into the ground to protect you from the beach cyclones instead of paying to customize your (now flooded) lead-shielded underground bunker.

Or, hey, a plague of insect bites that turns us all into mutant grasshoppers so we're no longer smart enough to understand or use all the technology we invented, and all our tablets and computers decay on our desktops as we hop off into the fields to eat raw ears of corn or maybe just each other...

You're really onto something there!

One of the dumbest ways to head into an apocalypse (as in dumb for us to let ourselves get there) I've only read in a couple books is when technology becomes really advanced and we just party then forget how to fix the technology.

Imagine AI getting smarter and smarter and us handing over more and more responsibilities until no one can accomplish anything without it, or there is a techno elite and the ignorant masses.

But I guess for dumb I was trying to think of something kind of silly, and not thinking of anything good.

That's pretty valid, though. The country is full of people who wouldn't know how to fix a clogged toilet on their own, let alone forage, cook from scratch, make clothes...

I see it as a very possible scenario so find stories like that interesting/frightening.

I once saw some prompt about the main character being caught in an apocalypse but they are on the search for an orthodontist because they were about to get their braces off. That would be a true horror haha.
