Tom Thanks for writing this review, so I don't have to. You have captured what I was thinking, too.

message 2: by Loopy (new)

Loopy Absolutely spot on. What a disappointment.

message 3: by Matt (new)

Matt Bubna-Litic well said

message 4: by Omry (new)

Omry Yadan spot on, I stopped reading this somewhere in the middle when I could no longer take the boredom.

message 5: by Theo (new)

Theo Couldn't agree more.

message 6: by Omry (new)

Omry Yadan In fact, I discovered that you can return audible books up to a year after buying them after I accidentally bought a book that was completely not what I intended.
One of the legitimate reasons to do it is "I did not like the book" so I took the opportunity to return this book as well.

message 7: by Frank (new)

Frank Are there previous books set in this universe that are better?

message 8: by Jay (new)

Jay Pandora'a Star and Judas Unchained are the previous books in this universe which introduces Nigel and the cast and explains how the commonwealth came to be. Both are much better than this one imo

message 9: by Kirby (new)

Kirby Couldn't have said it better!

message 10: by Saxacat (new)

Saxacat Spot on; wish I'd read this review before buying the book.

message 11: by Rodney (new)

Rodney Hatch Lots of life and history is tedious. People stuck in ruts blindsided to a bigger agenda. All wiil be revealed. Maybe.

message 12: by Beyti (new)

Beyti Peter F. Hamilton creates a universe. In there; you will experience inter-galactic wars, alien invasions, conspiracy, politics, people living in different timelines. You can`t expect to observe only action packed sci-fi part. You need to see the lives of people who don`t have centuries of lifespan, who don`t have biononics, who don`t have rejuvenation. They are the part of his universe. I personally love seeing he touches the lives of "boring" people in his universe. It makes his universe more diverse and more deeper.

message 13: by Pickle (new)

Pickle I was expecting something akin to Ian M Banks but I'm now at 300 pages and it's more like Brandon Sanderson, dystopian steampunk fantasy, which is not quite what I felt like reading. There's some serious pacing issues in this book, fleeting moments of intrigue are swiftly followed by a loss of pace and pages of dialogue that I've started skipping over to improve the pace.

message 14: by Su (new)

Su Vida This is so true! Exactly what I felt. I skimmed the middle of the book.
