Excellent review. I'm still in the middle of my reread and really enjoying it - I will reread your thoughts after finishing. I definitely agree that Harriet's dilemma will resonate with many.
No worries, I think I remember most of the twists from my previous read, so spoilers aren't a problem! Not that you have included any.
I believe Sayers turned her stodgy middle-aged peer detective who won't inherit the entailed estate into THE MOST ROMANTIC male character ever, and love the way she did it.
It has been a master class for my writing, and a model for how to have that kind of a character be believable. And it is a story beautifully finished in one novel - Busman's Honeymoon - and two short stories.
