I find there is not much real horror in Lovecraft anyway. Or at least his stories don't inspire much horror in me. Ok, there's the occasional twinge. But anyway, I prefer him when he manages to unite his Dunsanian excesses with his Poe-induced existential weird. My favourite story is probably The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. Best read after a warmup of The Statement of Randol Carter, The Cats of Ulthar, The Other Gods, Pickman's Model (not directly related, but has ghouls), The Silver Key (takes place after the Dream-Quest, but can be read first). And then just don't read Through the Gates of the Silver Key. At all. What a dreadful collaboration that was!
