Twee is such a good word to describe this!
I echo Sarah's comment: twee is exactly the word. What a disappointment, because the premise is so good.
I'm noticing a pattern in these mid-star reviews. The underlying tone is jealousy—an irritation that they weren’t clever enough to write a book that so artfully circumvents lexiconical conventions while completely embracing the spirit of the very same laws. The reviewers purse their lips and use far too many words to say, “Well, I could have done it better.”
