The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) Hello, welcome to the Book Review Exchange. Please take a moment to tell us about yourself. Tell us a lot or a little. what you say is up to you. Some suggested questions to answer, and they are only suggestions to help you start, are:

What would you like to be known as (name, what should we call you)?

Are you an Author, "just a reviewer," primarily a blogger, reader-only (no reviews) or any combination of these, anything we haven't mentioned?

Do you have a preferred Genre/category of books that you like to read?

What is your favorite colour?

What is the terminal air speed of a laden swallow?

Are you talking about an African or an English Swallow?

(okay, those last two questions are highly optional)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) Hello, I'm Hugh, A.K.A. I, Curmudgeon. I'm primarily a reader reviewer. I don't have a real favorite genre or category of books per-say, other than fiction, though I tend to read a lot of Fantasy (Urban and Epic), Sci-Fi, police procedural, psycho-thrillers and Action/Adventure books. My favorite colour is blue.

Hi, I'm Pam. I'm an avid reader. I tend to be drawn to anything that has a fair amount of action in it so genre doesn't really matter. I don't write too many reviews although it's something I would like to get better at, so being here will certainly help that.

I also write...I love writing and I write under the pen name E.P. Scott in honor of my mom who always wanted to write but never got around to it. I have four manuscripts under my belt (averaging between 85,000 and 100,000 words). I am in the process of editing/rewriting/pulling my hair out on occasion one of my manuscripts with the hopes of publishing it later this year.

Please visit my profile page to see some thoughts on cover pages.

I am working on my website, although nothing is there now, but hopefully within the next couple of months it will be up and running. My domain name is greatscottwriting.com. You can find me at twitter @EP_Scott. I tweet all things publishing, blogs I enjoy reading, and, at times, mindless drivel.

I am a member of the Alberta Writer's Guild, River Bottom Writers and The Strathcona Foundation of Writers (anything else you want to know about me you can find on my profile).

I'm back on GR after a brief hiatus. Thank you Curmdgeon, for inviting me. I look forward to all the fun discussions that will, I'm sure, occur here.

Oh, and my favourite colour is RED!

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) Hi, Pam, welcome, I look forward to all the discussions too! Glad your here.

Sticky Note Book Recs Melissa Hello, I'm Melissa! My favorite color is purple!!

I'm a reader-reviewer type, but I have been lazy lately, and haven't been writing as many reviews as I would like.
I don't really consider myself a very good review writer, but I definitely would like to be able to write decent, well put together, helpful reviews, so perhaps hanging with you lovely people will help! :)

I like reading a little of everything. My favorite seems to be post-apocalyptic books, I have a thing for them. :) I really enjoy children's and young adult books too.

Well, that might be partly because I home school my 3 kiddos and we read a TON of books together. So, if you see my currently-reading list, that isn't an exaggeration. I'm really reading 10 books at a time. ;)

Anyways, thanks for the invite! Glad to be here.

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) Hello Melissa! Welcome to the group. I'm glad you made it. When the lights just right, I like my reviews... when the lights wrong... I think mine stink too.

I opened a "Tips for Reviews" Folder. I hope we can fill that up, because I need all the help I can get.

I'm glad your here.

I've got a 5 year old (almost 6) son and an 8 year old daughter. My daughter has written a couple reviews and my son loves being read to. I hope some how, all this Goodreas magic can get or keep them excited about reading as I have been.

Welcome to the group, I'm glad your here!

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Melissa,

I hope to improve my review writing skills as well. Welcome!

message 8: by Xdyj (new)

Xdyj Hi, I'm xdyj, just a reader. I do write reviews on GR but they're mostly just self reminders. I do hope to write better, more helpful reviews in the future. My favorite color is green.

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) Welcome xdyj, I'm glad your here. "Just Readers" are welcome. Feel free to point out reviews that you read and liked.

I hope we get enough people with different styles so I can get a chance to try some new things in reviews. Welcome!

Thank you Mark... I'll post one of her reviews tomorrow. It's through a second GR account of mine (secondary accounts aren't just for sock puppets-you know!) I let her post through that one.

Now I'm really going to bed... really... this time .. I mean it! :)

↜ƈɦǟռ☂ɛℓℓɛ↝ Hello everyone, I'm Chantelle. I'll review anything, you name it, I've probably commented on it somewhere. I review on GR, Amazon US &UK(kindle), Barnes & Noble(nook), iTunes(iBooks), smashwords.com, anywhere else I'm asked to, and any other place that strikes my fancy at the time. I review, acr, edit, suggests, whatever. I'm very into details, and seem to remember everything.
I love the smell of a new book, and there is just something special about the feel of an actual book in your hands. However I do love my ebooks, too. I prefer PDFs, since they sync into my iBooks, but can read most versions through my different apps.
The doorbell rang today, and to my surprise, it was an arc. How great is that, waking up to a new book. I love knowing an author can trust me with their babies, and values an honest review.
I read many genres. Although PNR would probably be my favorite. I do tons of children's and YA reviews with my 8 yo daughter. We do a weekly book club at school and AR. And a big high five to her, she just had her first book published, and I received my copies Friday.
My favorite color, oh no, that's the toughest question I've gotten all month. I love all things bright. I love, love, love electric yellow, but am always told to pick a real color, so that would have to be Orange. But have always loved blue, since I was a little girl.

message 13: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty Hi everyone, my name is Kirsty and my favourite colour is pink.

I'm an avid reader but have only recently started making a habit of reviewing everything I read. It's a habit I want to stick to though as I'm finding I really enjoy it.

I will read almost anything, I have so many interests that I can't limit myself to a specific genre. I enjoy trying to find as wide a variety of books as possible to read.

I also hope to be a successful author one day. I have written a few short stories over the years (for my eyes and very close friends only), but I haven't branched out and tackled a novel yet which is my goal.

Thanks a lot for the invite, I'm sure this group will help build up my confidence in writing reviews. I have a goal to read 100 books this year, and to also review each book that I read.

message 17: by Coco (new)

Coco Dunlap Hi everyone, I'm Nicole. An author and reader, I don't know which I do better :) I love to read drama, romance, suspense, family centered, history, every genre except horror and erotic--some science fiction. I know that writing reviews are very helpful for the author, so I try to do so, and if not at least rate the book that I'm reading. Sometimes the book is so good I don't have anything to write. Sometimes a book is so awful that I won't write anything at all, or rate either.
Much success to all who endevour to become an author, for your heart follow your passion

message 18: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) Welcome Nicole. I'm glad you joined us. Thank you for saying reviews are helpful to authors. I agree with you hole heartedly. I know that it's safe to say "not all reviews are helpful." Maybe we could start a thread for authors to tell us what "is" helpful in a review, for them? (I'm sure the answer varies from author to author).

message 19: by Coco (new)

Coco Dunlap That is a good idea. Having other author's opinion will help me when I write reviews for author/friends that want me to read their book, because sometimes I don't know what to put.

message 20: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) I'll set it up. Thanks for the idea!

↜ƈɦǟռ☂ɛℓℓɛ↝ A big hello, hello to everyone. I'm so happy, this is doing so well just a few days into it.

↜ƈɦǟռ☂ɛℓℓɛ↝ Well C.J., I'm glad to help. I hope you meet many, many new reviewers to help you out.

message 23: by Seeley (last edited Apr 16, 2013 10:36AM) (new)

Seeley James Thanks for the invite, Hugh. What a great idea. I'm a writer/reader/reviewer. I promise to focus on reader/reviewer in this forum (I read the "Authors read here first!" rules :)

I've received compliments on my reviews (which baffles me to no end) so I'll post what I do in the appropriate section.

My favorite color is Blue... no, I mean, purple. And I can recite Monty Python chapter and verse! (Thanks Hugh, always warms my heart when I see Holy Grail references :)

Looking forward to it!

Peace, Seeley

Hi Nicole
I like to think that every aspect of a review will help the author in some way. Bad can be converted to good depending on the way the author looks at it.

I think this is especially important to up and coming authors who have written one book and are onto the second and third. In those instances, knowing your own weakness as a writer can certainly help you to avoid those same stumbling blocks as you mature with your writing.

I've had people say good and bad things about my writing...everything has it merits in some way.

I have no favorite genre or color - it all depends on quality, context, mood, etc.

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) Hi Cheryl, Seeley and C.J. Thank you for joining. I'm glad to see all of you here.

C.J. and Seeley, we have a "Blog-o-sphere" folder where you can post links to your blog, or even make a thread so you can post links when you update it. (Seeley, I was going to post a link to your blog anyway. I read it and like your reviews.)

Cheryl, thank you for coming. I still intend to put a link to your group on our "Tips for review writing" thread. I've enjoyed it alot and learned a lot from it.
Welcome to the Book Review Exchange!

M.J. Webb Hi guys - I'm an ex-author/reader who is now enjoying his new found freedom. A full time job and small family means I'm permanently tired, so I read slowly. I've taken to reading before work, in my dinner hour and at night (though I'm usually fast asleep after a chapter or two).
I'm now exploring new genres. Just read the Millennium Trilogy (loved them) and have started two books, one at home and one at work. I've gone for historical fiction and horror (trying something new). Have to say though, as a writer of fantasy adventures, these will always appeal to me.
Oh, I like black. I'm not weird or a goth, I just do. :-)

seak Hi, I'm Bryce, but I go by Seak at a bunch of online locations such as this. I'm a blogger/reviewer and "like" addict (both the giving and receiving).

I contribute to a couple blogs (Only the Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy, SffAudio, Shelf Inflicted) and yes I do have problems!

As you might be able to tell I read almost exclusively science fiction and fantasy but there are plenty of subgenres and I've read most (although still haven't read any steampunk for some reason).

I can't wait for my three kids (two-year-old boy and twin 8-month-old girls) to start reading and I'm already prepping a shelf for books they can begin with.

I also support parenthesis, only one space after a period, and the Oxford comma. :)

↜ƈɦǟռ☂ɛℓℓɛ↝ Welcome Bryce, Nicole, seeley, everyone.

According to google: The airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow is roughly 11 meters per second, or 24 miles per hour.

Goge Hi! I'm Goge and reading is my passion. I am a reader/occasional reviewer, English not being my mother tongue sometimes limits me from elaborating on my opinion on the book. The genres that I enjoy are quite versatile: PNR, UF, drama, mysteries, detective stories, good romance (the one that include real people and real life in it), spy stuff, historical dramas, crazy Scandinavian murder mysteries... Well, you get the picture. Color-blue. On most days anyway :).

Hi Goge,

Welcome to the group. If English isn't your first language, what is? Maybe Scandinavian (I'm just guessing cause you mentioned it).
