I'm wondering what you mean by "people?" You mean, those whose knee-jerk racism was taken for granted and normalized by complaisant publishers and readers?
Because of course there were other people who recognized these terms and outlooks as offensive and did not enable them by the kind of "tolerance' that you're displaying.
