DC (decaff coffee) Not the biggest book reader yet but one day I'll get there. For now my all time favorite is Carrie by Stephen King . I really love it. I find myself relating to most of the characters and really love how accurate it is to what went around growing up for me.
Plus this cover from the copy I read is sick:
Carrie by Stephen King
The second favorite is Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu . I love it just because of what it represents and what this book means to me.

I'm a big fan of Maberry too.
He has a writing style that really keeps the story moving.

R. Delgato Morgan Solis The Backrooms, it gave such an eerie feeling and made you feel as if you were losing your own mind when reading it. It's different from most books I've read, it will challenge your sanity fr!!

I loved COME CLOSER!

message 12: by Alondra (last edited Feb 04, 2024 08:23AM) (new)

Alondra Miller I can't name just one; so here are a few:

Carrie - My first horror novel ever. I saw scenes from the movie that my mother refused to let me watch. So, I saw the credits after sneaking/lurking, and saw it was based on a novel by Stephen King. The rest is history.

The Lesser Dead - Made me a fan of Christopher Buehlman. Hook, line and sinker. I love everything he writes.

Patient Zero - Recommended by someone in this group, years ago. I can't thank this group enough. Joe Ledger is king! Not all of the books are 5 star reads and can be unbelievable at times; but this first book sets the tone. I've read them all.

Carrion Comfort - !!!! Another Horror Aficionados recommendation. I had no idea what I was getting into. Mind vampires was not on my bingo card; and I loved it. Highly recommended.

The Walking Dead, Vol. 1: Days Gone Bye - My first foray into graphic novels. As soon as I saw the first few episodes of the tv series; i had to get the comics. I am so glad I did. So much better then the show; and the show was excellent most of the time... (until season 4-5; what was that?? Ugh)

The Exorcist - One of the few books that actually creep me out.

Enter, Night - a more obscure (??) vampire novel that does not get talked about enough, and I don't like that!

Gone to See the River Man - This book was just unsettling. I was not scared or creeped out, per se. Something about it unnerved me and I felt the bile rise up in the back of my throat. 🤢🤢

...There are quite a few more but those were off the top of my head.

Edit:

In the Valley of the Sun - Another vamp novel, but this was so good. A predator meets another predator, and things spiral. You almost feel sorry for predator #1, then remember he's a POS. This was well written and I fell in from page 1.

I just started Sister, Maiden, Monster. It got disturbing so quickly, though I anticipate that it will get nuts. I watched an interview with the author talking about it, and it just looks wonderful.

message 17: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Whitman The Summer I Died by Ryan C Thomas. It is hard to truly disturb me and this book still makes me uncomfortable thinking about it even though it’s been years since I picked it up!

Adrienne L Julia by Peter Straub. I've read it at least five times.

message 24: by Chris (new)

Chris Jones In terms of most fun to read' I'd say Stephen King's 'It' is my favourite. In terms of sheer creepiness and uneasiness, it has to be Dan Simmon's 'Song of Kali'. Would love to hear recommendations for the latter category!

message 26: by Ariel (new)

Ariel Palenik(TheDayDreamingWriter) My favorite horror book of all time, would be, "Misery" by Stephen King. There has never been a book I literally could not put down for more than 5 minutes, but that streak ended with "Misery."

message 27: by Miles (new)

Miles I like pretty much everything coming from Lovecraft

message 28: by Jim (new)

Jim When I read ’Salem’s Lot way back in the 90s, I thought that was my favorite horror novel, and after consideration, I think it still is. Are there better novels in the horror genre since then? Yes, such as The Terror and The Hunger, but nothing got my heart beating faster than 'Salem's Lot reading it on a dark, lonely night one summer.

message 29: by Allan (new)

Allan Batchelder I don't see any Jack Ketchum here. His books are disturbing AF. There are also some scary (early) Dean Koontz. But I think the most frightening, from a certain perspective, is Pet Sematary, by King.

Absolutely agree with you about Pet Sematary...

The funny thing is, I love the book, but I actually prefer the second Pet Sematary movie wise.

message 31: by Beth (new)

Beth Misery
Bird Box
The Hellbound Heart
The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires

Ania Ahlborn writes a lot of good ones but I'm not a big fan of the endings. That's the only reason they haven't made my "favorites" list

message 46: by Squire (new)

Squire For me, having a favorite means that you hold ONE above all others. Otherwise, you have favorites. I have a list of many horror novels that have struck a cord with me over the years (and have become more thrilling for me on successive readings than horrific), but there is only ONE that scared the crap out of me in 1983 and continues to scare me on each subsequent reading:

Ghost Story by Peter Straub

I've only read it twice--once at 17 and again in my late 40s. Each was a different, yet equally intense, experience for me. I hesitate to read it a 3rd time (though I know I will) because of what I know is waiting for me inside.

Luvtoread (Trying to catch up) Megan, I loved The Haunted Forest Tour so much and I will read it again one day plus The Broken Places was also so good!

Road of Bones by Christopher Golden
Nosferatu by Peter Cawdron

message 48: by Megan (new)

Megan Latulippe luvtoread, I thought it would be a silly little horror novel but it turned out sooooo good. I listened to the audiobook on an 8 hour drive and was hooked !
