Couldn't have said it better, Anne. I felt exactly the same way about this one.

Oh, thank god. It seems like this is a top pick for everyone, and I'm just not seeing it.
I enjoyed the first volume… I liked the alternate take of the Els being the blue-collar folks at the bottom of the cast system… but I think you might’ve been ahead of the curve on your skepticism. For me, as time has gone on, the sheen has kinda worn off this (and the Absolute universe as a whole.. with the exception of Wonder Woman, which I believe is still maybe the best comic on stands rn). So many phenomenal writers, but it’s all devolved into kinda dark, gruesome, bleak stories that feel like we’re getting back to my least favorite parts of the whole New 52 initiative from 15 years ago…
Oh, that sucks to hear. I'm still a little behind on some of these. Good to hear WW is still holding steady. I've not really heard any complaints about that one yet at all.
This and Flash are the only Absolute ones I cannot get into. I am waiting until the arc completes until going back. Still not sure where I stand on GL, but that has always been a favorite character, so I realize I'm not as critical.
Oh! Yeah, Flash is a hard one, too. I like it more now that I'm further into it, but I could also completely let it go.
That's good to know. lol
Sometimes you read all the glowing reviews and wonder if you're the only one who doesn't get it.
Nice review! It is hard to stick out from the crowd and say something different than what everyone says. But I come here for individual takes--not someone to say what I already think!

And I'm not saying it's bad. It's just the Krypton thing for me, I think. But Aaron does a good job making this one quite a bit different from a lot of the other "retellings" out there. Points for that, right?!
