What a terrific book! Reading the Vallejos' letters was like going back in time to early California in the 1800s, witnessing the changes when California became part of the United States. Reading their letters, as General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo and Francisca Benecia Vallejo watched their children grow up and had many adventures of their own, I felt like I knew these people and I miss them now that I've finished the book. If you love history and learning about other lives and times, I definitely recommend this book.
