"I don't want the authors to be right" would have saved you a few minutes of typing.
Looking at the negative reviews of this book, I'm struck by the way that everyone's got a different take and I basically agree with all of them. There really are a lot of things wrong with it.
Didn't they show it to anyone who works professionally with GenAI and ask for constructive feedback? Or did they do that and ignore everything the experts said, or did they cherry-pick their experts? I don't get it. Emily Bender is a smart woman, I've read good papers by her on computational linguistics and until now I had a strong respect for her. Maybe the problem is that computational linguistics is a field where she has a lot of real hands-on experience, but she just hates GenAI so much that she won't even touch it and consequently doesn't really know anything about it.
