Buddy Scalera It's so true about these original source stories. We grow up with the Disney interpretation, which is rarely the actual intended story.

Thanks for the review. It's a good timely, holiday review to consider reading...for the first time.

message 2: by MasterSal (new)

MasterSal I remember reading the book many years after the cartoon and really enjoyed the story. I completely forgot that the cartoon was supposed to be the same. All in all I think I prefer the cartoon - it was creepier

Plus, it's a short story, which is always a bonus when it comes to classics.

Agreed! The cartoon was far more menacing than the actual story. There was really nothing at all creepy about it until the 'Headless Horseman' shows up at the end, and even that isn't very scary. More of a chase scene than anything else. And since I didn't much like Crane, I wasn't really rooting for him to get away. lol

message 5: by DrWarthrop (new)

DrWarthrop I didn’t even know there was a book to the movie *shame mode on*
Awesome review Anne, i really want to read it despite your accurate criticism about wrong charakatermodels.

message 6: by Anne (new)

Anne Ha! This one is fast-fast-fast, so there's nothing to lose by picking it up. At all. And the thing is, I don't even believe Irving meant for Crane to be the hero of this! I think it's just something organic that has happened over time. He started off fine, but I was shocked at how little I liked him by the end of the story.

message 7: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Wow, great review - so the Disney version was a white wash?! My goodness...

message 8: by A.J. (new)

A.J. Curtis HAHAHAHAHAHA. Ichabod was a Douche! hahahahahahah awesome review.

Sounds really interesting and for such a short read certainly worthwhile.

message 12: by Anne (new)

Anne Oh yeah. Tell me what you think of it. You may fall in love with Ichabod and tell me to go to Hell for making fun of such a sweetheart. ;)

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Unless I misunderstood the review I feel as though the Disney version, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad showed ole Ichabod to be a bit of a scummy lad as well.

message 14: by Anne (new)

Anne Did it really? I haven't seen it since I was a kid and I thought he was getting picked on. lol Just goes to show...
I was also thinking of the movie with Depp where he was the hero and the tv show where Crane was also the good guy.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I just watched it again the other day for my two my boys and kept thinking "man, Ichabod is kind of a jerk". It's only until Brom tells the ghost story and you see how scared Ichabod gets that we, the audience, feel sorry for him. A bit of emotional manipulation, but I still enjoy it for what it is. On a side note, I know the Johnny Depp Sleepy Hollow gets hate, but that movie's a guilty pleasure of mine.

message 16: by Anne (new)

Anne Most of the stuff that gets hate is a guilty pleasure of mine. We're watching that movie while we hand out candy...shhhhhh!

:rofl emoje:

yeah if you rewatch the cartoon you'll see he uses people and also wants to get in with the Van Tassels because they are wealthy.

message 18: by Lata (new)

Lata Oh, was I ever taken in as a child by Disney and their version of this story!
Love your review of the actual story.

Thanks, Lata. According to Neon Sunscreen, the Disney version shows him in a less than flattering light. But I swear, I never saw it that way as a child. Plus, the other media representations show him as the hero - we were duped!

I'll be watching the Johnny Depp version more than likely. Unless my littlest talks us into Lights Out again. *shudder*

message 22: by Anne (new)

I was a fan of the "Lights Out" short; the same with Mama, Cargo, even Pixels. But, like a lot of shorts that are turned into full length features it cheapened my initial experience. I can see why people enjoy it, especially if they've never seen the short before, but I found the lore to be unnecessary.

Same with "Cargo". The short was impactful and emotional, then Netflix comes out with a movie that felt like a rejected episode of The Walking Dead.

I'm glad Lights Out gives you a fun time and hope you take my comments with a grain of salt. I'm also the guy that thinks The Exoricist is a total joke, so. LULZ

Happy HalloWEEEEEN!

message 24: by Anne (new)

Anne I think most of my enjoyment of scary movies (not my genre) comes from watching it with my kids. There's really nothing that compares to screaming tweenage/teenage girls when it comes to that sort of thing, imho.
Exorcist...I can't remember it. I saw it a long time ago. I did freak out when the little exorcist girl jumped off the bed and chased us out of the room in one of those haunted house things years and years ago, though!

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Haha, I thought the same thing! And I had based all my assumptions on the Disney cartoon too. I remember feeling bad for Ichabod watching the cartoon when I was younger, but upon watching it again the other day, it does show him as a wanna be player who's really after the pretty girl's dad's dowery. I think as a kid, you feel bad for the victim of "the headless horseman". As an adult, I found Ichabod to be a player, and a coward. So yeah, I think douchebag totally sums it up! Lovin' these reviews on the classics - keep 'em coming!

message 26: by Clay (new)

Clay Bartel Thanks so much!!

I agree. That's how I feel about some kid's films or shows. I highly enjoy animated films for what they are, but there are definitely many out there that are total garbage. But, I may enjoy the bad ones more because my kids get a kick out of them.

I really felt bad for him! Also, I doubt it ever occurred to me to think he was after her $$, you know? <--because kids don't think that way.
I guess I've got to carve out some time to re-watch it.

I've watched and (shamefully) enjoyed a lot of terrible cartoons over the years. Monster High & Barbie's Dream House both come to mind. I still enjoy watching all the superhero cartoons, though.

I'm not afraid to say Barbie's Dream House was hilarious. I've only seen a little bit of Monster High but Super Monsters is the one I'm more familiar with.

message 32: by Anne (new)

Anne Ok, so I wasn't the only one who snickered through Dream House? That makes me feel better.

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Hahahaha!

message 34: by Raquel (new)

Raquel Just finished reading a few minutes ago. You're totally right! A gold digging, douche bag! And here I thought he was just the sweetest, most innocent lamb. 😂

message 35: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa Eddy 🤣 I love this review!

message 36: by Anne (new)

Anne Thank you!

message 37: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Hilariously, the Disney cartoon keeps some of the elements of the original short story (including that Ichabod was after Katrina’s wealth).

I was re-watching it the other day and I just kept, “Man – every single one of these characters is a jerk! Ichabod is after a woman solely because of her wealth, Katrina is leading him on to make Brom jealous, and then finally Brom uses Ichabod’s fear of the supernatural against him to get Katrina.

message 38: by Kat (new)

Kat Oh my gosh, I agree with you completely, and I loved the story! Dude had it coming!!

That's so true! And I completely missed it when I was a kid. Just felt bad for him.

Anne Kat wrote: "Oh my gosh, I agree with you completely, and I loved the story! Dude had it coming!!"

It WAS a great story, wasn't it? But yeah, I wasn't at all sad to see him scamper off at the end. lol

message 41: by Michael (new)

Michael Otto Has anyone seen the 2 seasons of Sleepy Hollow TV series

message 42: by Anne (new)

Anne I haven't watched that show. Anyone?

message 43: by Michael (new)

Michael Otto Ann said "I haven't watched that show. Anyone?

I have watched both seasons and have the DVD's to see their take on the story.

message 44: by Jennelle (new)

Jennelle Agreed,Anne. I grew up watching the Disney version, which I still watch every October. I love it! Boy, I was really surprised when I just recently read the actual story. Ichabod was a gold digger! Well,I'll be damned! Great review. I enjoyed every second of it. The GIFs are elite!

message 45: by Anne (new)

Anne Thanks, Jennelle! And weren’t you kind of happy to know he deserved to get pranked that hard? It made the ending so much sweeter😂

message 46: by Michelle (new)

Michelle I loved this review, and I had no idea that he was scummy! I always worked off the cartoon.
