In his correspondence, he mentions this as a rare novel that he rewrote over and over again — with the final section being labored over so that every word was perfect. I need to reread this one in light of that.

Thanks for sharing this. I didn't know that. But I can tell by the writing that he didn't gloss this one. Far less stream-of-consciousness skimming through the plot than some of his early works. This is some very careful writing.

I was digging around my notes and it seems one of the sections he labored over each word, but it as not, I believe, the finale.
