Marie I will use one thread for all the books which to me will be easier as we have so many threads now for the series it is best to keep this reading journey contained within one thread. :)

We will be reading the books in order starting with:

A Subtle Agency

We can add our thoughts here when we start reading. :)

message 2: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Thanks, Marie. I'll tag along with any reads.

Janette Walters I’ll be “ramped” up and ready to go next month Marie and Graeme! I remember reading the first two books and having some questions. I always worried I’d be putting you out with messages asking you about them Graeme. This time around there will be no reason to hold back.

Will this thread be like the last one…with spoilers allowed? So excited! Marie, thank you for setting up this buddy read 🥰 📚

message 4: by Janette (new)

Janette Walters Quick question for you Marie. What kind of pace do you want to move at with the series? One book per month? Quicker? Slower? Just so I can get an idea of how many other books I’ll be able to enjoy while also reading these. Thanks!

message 5: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Hi Janette,

I propose we use spoilers just in case anyone else wants to join this party.

If you have any questions, ask away. I'll answer them here.

Cheers Graeme

Hi Janette! Thank you for joining me on this vampire journey.

We can do them once a month as that would probably be best as I know that we both probably have other books to read as well that we want to get to. lol

I agree with Graeme - it is best to use spoilers as we might have others that haven't read the books and want to hop in on the vampire train. :)

Looking forward to lots of "ramping" fun! :)

message 8: by Marie (new)

Marie Also throw your questions at him Janette! lol Don't hold anything back! lol The only way to solve the mystery of your thoughts and questions is to ask the author. :) Works every time. :) Besides - Graeme loves to answer questions! :)

Janette Walters Hahaha!! I’ll have to learn how to block out those spoilers. But you really can teach an old dog new tricks. So I’ll figure it out. 🤪

Thanks again Graeme for taking this ride with us!

Above the "comment" box you should see a hyperlink text which reads, "(some html is ok)". When you click on that, a box will pop up which lists the most common tips, including how to spoiler tag text.

Janette Walters Thanks J. 🙂

Hi Janette - I wasn't planning on starting my reread journey till about the middle of February as I have some other reading commitments that I need to finish up so you can take your time if you want with what you are reading now. :) Or if you want to jump in early that is fine too and I will play catch up. :)

message 16: by Janette (new)

Janette Walters I can definitely hold off a couple weeks Marie. Lord knows I’ve got alot of TBRs to get to. Just let me know when you’re ready 🥰

Janette Walters Woot woot!

Welcome back Graeme! Hope your vacation was most excellent

message 21: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan It was, thanks Janette.

Very relaxing and restful.

message 22: by Marie (new)

Marie I have this opened and ready to go on my kindle - starting it today.

If you have any questions Janette ask Graeme! lol I could probably answer questions too as I have read this book so many times I should know it all like the back of my hand!!! LOL

But alas Graeme is the Master of the Metaframe so ask anything that your heart desires and it will be answered - well you might get cryptic answers but they will be some kind of answers. lol

message 23: by Janette (new)

Janette Walters Sounds great! I’ll get started on this tonight.

And so the journey begins!! 📚

message 24: by Graeme (new)

Yay!!! :)

You can read at your own pace Janette. However you want to do it.

Don't worry about spoilers with me and I wouldn't worry about anyone else either as we have a spoiler thread in this group that I am sure readers have peeked at so I don't worry about it with this buddy read. :)

message 26: by Janette (new)

Janette Walters Thanks Marie! I made it to the 20% mark this evening. Thoughts and questions to follow tomorrow. ❤️📚

message 27: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan 20%. A great start!

Janette Walters Was glad to begin my reread of A Subtle Agency last night. The prologue and chapter 1 have sooo much going on in them and I missed stuff the first time around. Graeme thank you for providing the “Dramatis Personae” at the beginning. WOW! So helpful both times around. I keep referring back to it.

I love how you’ve given your vampires many characteristics of what I consider belonging to the classic vampire. Ie Chloe must be invited into the Slayne household, their aversion to silver, how mesmerizing and inviting they can be to humans, their heightened senses, the process by which new vampires are created, etc.

I looked up Thoth, the Egyptian moon god, last night. Is there a reason why you chose that specific deity for your story? Do we find out the meaning of the title “A Subtle Agency”?

This time around, I gleaned much more info on the Metaframe/Divine Engine of Thoth, the ramping process, the binding curse Crane holds over Chloe and his other generals, early on. Well worth diving in at the beginning as it eliminated many of my original questions during read 1.

I love your writing Graeme. Your character development goes deep immediately with each player. And this paragraph…
“ A chaotic sea threatened to engulf him, reaching desperately, he found sanctuary from the chaos on an icy rock of fury. Dragging himself out of the clinging wasteland of madness he stood tall upon the glacial ice. It burned with pale fire while lightning played behind his eyes. Anton lifted his gaze. His eyes hardened as he promised with dreadful conviction, “I will make you pay.”…
My favorite so far!!!

Looking forward to jumping back into the Metaframe world later today! Hope you’re enjoying your reread as well Marie!

Graeme Rodaughan Janette wrote: "I looked up Thoth, the Egyptian moon god, last night. Is there a reason why you chose that specific deity for your story? Do we find out the meaning of the title “A Subtle Agency”?..."

Thoth is the god of knowledge and is often opposed to Set.

One of the characters refers to 'Subtle Agency,' near the end of Book #6 which clarifies precisely what this title means.

Thanks, Janette.

Much appreciated. I always think of characters first, then I find out what they do.

message 31: by Marie (new)

Marie I am actually up to the 17% mark.

You know what I do have some questions that I don't know if I ever asked or not. Shocking I know!!! lol :)

Ready Graeme? lol :)

Why did Anton's parents keep so much hidden from him? Did they think that he could not handle knowing there were vampires in the world? Or did they want him to have a normal life as much as possible before they let him know anything?

Also if Anton had not invited Chloe and Marcus into the house what would have happened? Since they were after the Papyrus would they have went ahead with any means necessary to acquire it?

Another thing I was wondering (shocker right? - lol) - what was the purpose of breaking Anna's leg? They had already come prepared with the sword so they were planning on using it in one manner or other. Chloe stabbing Anna with the sword - that was probably going to be coming but the breaking of the leg - some of that seemed to be overkill to me.

Also since Chloe turned Anna into a vampire - everything was healing (so the stab wounds and the broken leg were kind of redundant - my opinion only - lol) - was that the plan all along for Chloe to turn Anna into a vampire? Or was that just a last minute resort to try to get William to hand over the Papyrus?

Wow! Where did those questions come from - I don't know! Hahaha!

message 32: by Janette (new)

Janette Walters Hahaha! Now I want the answer to your questions also Marie! Lol

Graeme Rodaughan Marie wrote: "Why did Anton's parents keep so much hidden from him? Did they think that he could not handle knowing there were vampires in the world? Or did they want him to have a normal life as much as possible before they let him know anything?..."

They were in hiding from everyone. Anton's mom wanted Anton to blend in with the crowd. It didn't work out ...

message 34: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Marie wrote: "lso if Anton had not invited Chloe and Marcus into the house what would have happened? Since they were after the Papyrus would they have went ahead with any means necessary to acquire it?..."

They would've found a way in.

The notion of vampires being invited in is raised a couple of times in the books, but is never answered decisively.

Chloe is being polite when she meets Anton for the first time.

All of it is a steady escalation of pain and misery to get [1] either Anna or William to reveal the location of the papyrus, and [2] to horrify Anton into a life or revenge that Chloe aims to direct at Cornelius Crane.

Once she has the papyrus, the rest is spectacle to drive Anton forward towards Chloe's goals of freeing herself from Cornelius and his curse.

I remember that about Chloe. She seems to be always double crossing and conniving against Crane whilst staying just under his radar. My biggest regret over not reading past book 2 last year was missing out on more of that storyline.

Book 6 is out Janette. lol The whole series has been written - so we will get there eventually. We might (I say we might could read two books a month to get us there sooner) but it all depends on what we both have going on with our book reading. We can play it by ear and see how we fair with getting through each book. :)

Yes, I’ve got all 7 books. I just meant I’d need to wait until we reach book 6 before realizing the meaning behind book 1’s title. 😉

I didn’t have a chance to read further yesterday. But plan on reading more tonight.

J. Gowin I checked my library and was surprised to see I started reading this series eight and a half years ago.

Two presidents and a plague later, it seems like a long time.

message 47: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Hi, J.

I started work on the series in the 2nd half of 2013. That seems like an age away to me now.

message 48: by J. (new)

J. Gowin Well, 2020 and 2021 were the longest decades of my life.

message 50: by Marie (new)

Marie It does seem like it has been ages ago but it has sort of if you think about it that way. The first book came out in 2016 and next year will be 10 years. So there you go. :)
