Berit☀️✨ 🎉 Welcome to the Team! Let's Get This Party Started! 🎉
Here's a quick lowdown on how we're gonna roll with this gift exchange extravaganza:
🎁 The Night Before: I'll drop the deets on the exchange order, theme, and gift choices. This is where the fun begins!
🗣️ Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: Chat it up with your teammates to decide which tasks you want to tackle. It’s way more fun when everyone's involved, so let's make some noise!
📣 Spokesperson & Opinions: Pick someone to be your team's official voice, but don't be shy about sharing your thoughts, even if you're not the chosen one.
📅 Task Time: Tasks are usually due about a week after the exchange wraps up. Hang tight, especially for these first few rounds.
📋 Primary Exchange Rules: Keep an eye on the exchange thread for the main rules.
👋 Intro Time: Say hi to your awesome teammates! Let them know your fave music genre and your time zone. This will be super helpful for coordinating everything. Just a heads up, I'm in California (Pacific Time), and don't forget about the US falling back on November 3rd!
Let's make this exchange epic! 🎊

C Hey y'all! Excited to get going!

message 3: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Yes..super excited to be in Metal Mob!

Hi everyone! I'm Michelle and I live in New York State and my time zone lands in EST. Although I love all kinds of music my favorites tend to lean toward harder rock, metal, and folk metal. My favorite band is The Hu.

message 4: by Dee (last edited Sep 14, 2024 11:45AM) (new)

Dee hey y'all - newbie here to this challenge - i'm also doing turf wars right now

favorite music is probably classic rock although most of the time my amazon music app is playing show tunes or music scores

ETA - whoops, I'm on eastern time because I hail from Maryland, just outside DC

message 5: by Kathy (last edited Sep 14, 2024 05:18AM) (new)

Kathy Hi team. Kathy checking in from the mountains of Georgia, USA. Time zone is EST. Favorite music is instrumental and blues. However, I have been to the Grand Ole Opry many times. Favorite performance was Charlie Daniels playing The Devil Went Down to Georgia on our birthdays. That's right, I share the same birthday date as Charlie Daniels!

message 6: by C (new)

C Sorry, should have also included that I'm in Pacific time, and my favorite music is probably country but I'm a bit eclectic toward classics. So country (usually 2000s and earlier), folk, movie soundtracks, Celtic or bagpipe, anything John Williams. My playlists are pretty random...

message 7: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ Hey everyone ~ Melissa here from Illinois so CST for me. Looking forward to playing with you all. Hmmm not a huge metal fan. I'm more of a Classic Rock and Pop listener with some country thrown in. Kind of eclectic like my reading habits, lol.

I work full time. I try to be available as I can for our calls, but it doesn't always work out. That said - I'm always good with whatever is decided upon by those online at the time. I can always find a book that works for whatever we get.

@Kathy that is so cool you share a birthday w/Charlie Daniels. Awesome song!

message 8: by C (new)

C Kathy, that is so cool that you've seen Charlie Daniels in person!!! The Devil Went Down to Georgia and The Devil Comes Back to Georgia are gold!

message 9: by Pooja (new)

Pooja Peravali Hi everyone! I'm Pooja, and I'm playing from EST. I like pop, folk, bluegrass - and Telugu music, because I speak that language as well.

Not sure how available I'll be as I am now also working full-time, but I'm pretty flexible with tasks so count me toward the majority if I can't weigh in!

message 10: by C (new)

C If I'm not around for picking (working, and a week of vacay coming up), just get us an easy enough task lol. ;)

message 11: by Sandi (last edited Sep 14, 2024 03:07PM) (new)

Sandi Barnes Hi. Checking in. like others, if not around when it comes to making a decision regarding to picking the task, feel free to make a choice without my input.

As to my availability -- I'm in North Idaho and in the Pacific time zone, working mostly weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evenings are basically free so best time to get any response from me.

message 12: by Dee (new)

Dee How have groups picked in past? Poll? Secret group?

message 13: by Sandi (new)

Sandi Barnes been a long time since I've played, but no . . . right here in the thread.

Looks like I was the last of the original announcement to check in, but Berit has added another player to our team.

Welcome Richard!

message 14: by C (new)

C Sandi, no way! I'm in North Idaho too. Small world! :)

message 15: by Kathy (new)

Kathy I think I may have played this or one like it before. Berit gave us 5 choices per week and we each picked a choice to fulfill. Has anyone else played? Am I remembering correctly?

message 16: by C (new)

C Oh, I thought this was like the white elephant prompt exchange that Berit did. I dunno then.

message 17: by Dee (new)

Dee Thé way i saw was credit gives a list of themed categories and team 1 picks a theme and the type of book to read is revealed

Team 2 can either then steal team 1´s theme/book or pick another category - like white elephant

message 18: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ Dee wrote: "Thé way i saw was credit gives a list of themed categories and team 1 picks a theme and the type of book to read is revealed

Yep, this is what we did for the last Eras Gift Exchange that Berit hosted. This whole process can take anywhere from 1-2 days total for all gifts to be picked ~ if memory serves correct.

message 19: by Sandi (new)

Sandi Barnes Yes, the gift exchange challenge she hosts which is a white elephant format.

First team picks an item from the list and Berit reveals the task associated with that item. Next team decides if they want to steal the task or pick another item from the list. Cycle through all the teams. Limit on the amount of times a task can be stolen (if memory serves, it is twice)

Hi to my neighbor C!!

message 20: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Gotcha. So basically we all read the same kind of book/task. I must have played a totally different game. This sounds like it will be fun too.

message 21: by C (new)

C *waves to Sandi* Hopefully we don't go after the same book at the library to fulfill a prompt lol.

message 22: by Richard (last edited Sep 15, 2024 03:01AM) (new)

Richard Hi team, checking in & adding notifications.

Richard's the name, reading's the game. 43, from Australia. I only like to read non-fiction. I listen to my metal playlist at work. My fave band at the moment is Sabaton.

Oh & my timezone is GMT+10.

message 23: by Pooja (new)

Pooja Peravali Yeah, a task can be stolen twice before it becomes locked. The very first team to pick can at the end decide to hold onto their current task or swap with one of the available ones if they want. There’s an order we go in on picks, but if you get your task stolen you get bumped to the top of the list to pick again.

message 24: by Pooja (new)

Pooja Peravali When you see it in practice it’s fairly straightforward!

message 25: by Pooja (new)

Pooja Peravali Also, anyone volunteer to be our spokesperson? That’s the person who will be posting our picks/casting the deciding vote when needed.

message 26: by Richard (last edited Sep 15, 2024 06:34AM) (new)

Richard I don't have the capacity in my life at the moment to be a spokesperson or help with logistics. But I am a power-reader, so can help in that way.

message 27: by Dee (new)

Dee i've never played but I tend to be on goodreads periodically throughout the day and can be spokesperson if needed

message 28: by Pooja (last edited Sep 15, 2024 11:38AM) (new)

Pooja Peravali I'm good with that!

Also, belatedly, our check-in tracker:

✅ Dee
✅ Kathy
✅ C
✅ Michelle
✅ Pooja
✅Sandy
✅ ~Melissa~
✅ Richard

Luckily, everyone is in! Keeping it up in case of late additions.

I don't mind doing completion trackers for each week - just won't be on regularly enough to post our picks.

Also, first pick starts tomorrow, so everyone keep an eye out for Berit's prelim post! She usually posts the picking order and sometimes our choices (without tasks revealed, ofc).

message 29: by ~Melissa~ (new)

message 32: by Pooja (new)

Pooja Peravali Lots of pop this week! I think we're low down enough on the list that we can just pick from open tasks, so no preferences from me right now. Berit's tasks are notoriously tricky to guess anyway.

message 33: by Pooja (new)

Pooja Peravali Also, here's Jenny's not-to-be-missed parody tasks. Please note these are NOT the actual tasks (people have gotten confused!) They are just very funny.

🎶Taste by Sabrina Carpenter
-Read a book about a restaurant reviewer. Preferably one in which the restaurant reviewer dies in the first chapter or so.
🎶Die With A Smile by Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars
-RAB about The Mona Lisa. Or, skip this task and go visit The Louvre. Try to get close enough to actually see it.
🎶Good Luck, Babe! by Chappell Roan
-RAB with a pig on the cover, and the phrase “That’ll do pig” in the title.
🎶BIRDS OF A FEATHER by Billie Eilish
-RAB with birds on the cover, in the text, in the story, and an author with a bird name (first or last). Bonus points if you use a feather as a bookmark, include a photo for proof.
🎶Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter
-Speed read a 250 page book in 59 minutes. Make sure you stop at your local coffee shop first.
🎶Who by Jimin
-RAB with a broken guitar on the cover, or one with Pete, Roger, John or Keith in the author’s name.
🎶Bed Chem by Sabrina Carpenter
-Read either Lessons in Chemistry, or Organic Chemistry. No substitutions.
🎶Please Please Please by Sabrina Carpenter
-RAB that was recommended to you. A lot. Or, let’s face it. Just finally read Murderbot All Systems Red). You must be tired of your friends begging you to do it by now.
🎶I Had Some Help (Feat. Morgan Wallen) by Post Malone, Morgan Wallen
-RAB that is ghostwritten. Or translated very badly by google translate. Interstellar super explorer is a great example of this. Check out Cat's review/synopsis on the book page. Worth it.
🎶A Bar Song (Tipsy) by Shaboozey
-RAB after a night out. Then write the best book review of your life. Spelling is not important.
🎶Hot To Go by Chappell Roan
-RAB about the fast food industry. Or one that asserts that Uber Eats will save the planet in some existential way.
🎶Not Like Us by Kendrick Lamar
-RAB about aliens. Good ones. Bad ones. Horny ones. Whatever floats your boat. They must be from a different solar system though, Mars is too close for this task.

message 34: by C (new)

C Jenny has such a killer imagination lol!!! :D

message 35: by Kathy (last edited Sep 16, 2024 06:40AM) (new)

Kathy And the game begins. Team Hip Hop picked A Bar Song. They liked a video of song done by Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgewick. Waiting for Berit's reveal. I'll be out of touch from noon to 4 pm EST today. I'll go with whatever the group chooses if I am away.

message 36: by Richard (new)

Richard Nothing says 'hip hop' like Kevin Bacon.

message 37: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ Pooja wrote: "Also, here's Jenny's not-to-be-missed parody tasks. Please note these are NOT the actual tasks (people have gotten confused!) They are just very funny.

She is funny, lol

message 38: by C (new)

C Die With a Smile is a good task. More doable potentially than A Bar Song. Will be interesting to see what else gets opened.

message 39: by Pooja (new)

Pooja Peravali I have a book that works for Bar Song, but agreed Die with a Smile would be easier.

message 40: by C (new)

C I mean, I think it's possible to find a book that can work for any task we get. I was just thinking we should try for something broader, so that people are able to get quickly any variety they desire.

message 41: by Dee (new)

Dee i anticipate die with a smile may get stolen - that one seems easier - but we'll see...

message 42: by C (new)

C Yeah, but if we want to lock anything on our pick, it has to get stolen at least once lol. ;)

message 43: by Pooja (new)

Pooja Peravali Please Please Please was opened by the Blues Bunch, task is “please” in the text three times (not sure if that’s exactly three or at least three).

Techno Troop picked Espresso, and we are waiting on the task.

message 44: by Dee (new)

Dee No one has stolen yet - my gut says steal (because that’s what makes this fun)

If anyone has a specific task they want - post here

message 45: by Kathy (last edited Sep 16, 2024 01:41PM) (new)

Kathy @Richard. You read nonfiction. Is there a particular task you are interested in which fits with your reading preferences?

Check msg. 31 to see song updates. Also, I can read romance but not a big fan of it. I prefer Jenny's interpretation of Not Like Us by Kendrick Lamar. It is all about the aliens!

message 46: by Richard (last edited Sep 16, 2024 02:04PM) (new)

Richard Kathy wrote: "@Richard. You read nonfiction. Is there a particular task you are interested in which fits with your reading preferences?"

Thank you for asking, Kathy. I won't be able to read for MPG Romance. If I had a choice, I'd prefer the Espresso one or the Bar one.

Edit: I really can do almost anything, just not specific genres that aren't a non-fiction subject. I have a huge collection for me to choose from.

message 47: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ So far everything revealed seems 'doable'. I'll be out of range for the next several hours so if it gets to us >> I'm good with whatever.

@ Dee ~ the stealing does make things interesting, lol

message 48: by C (new)

C Espresso might be good. Hard enough that others may pass it by, and easy enough to find something without looking too hard. Especially since we can ignore articles.

message 49: by Kathy (last edited Sep 16, 2024 03:02PM) (new)

Kathy I also can work with Espresso. I didn't realize that we could ignore articles. That makes it a bit easier. We still have a bit more time to check out a few more tasks.

message 50: by C (new)

C I'm pretty sure we can ignore articles? That's a usual challenge allowance? Lol, on the bright A and An start with a vowel, so The could be the only questionable one. :)
