A bit of history:

There is also a great trout stream at the base of Brown Mountain. So you can catch a lovely supper, then spend the night watching for the ghost lights.

J. Gowin A fair reminder to all of the fans of The Shining, thanks to the movie there are two hotels which can claim to be the Overlook.

The inspiration for the book as well as the hotel in the miniseries is the Stanley.
https://youtu.be/NQSoHP7TGVU

However, the hotel used as the exterior in the Kubrick movie was a completely different building.

Anne There’s a third that has been said to have been the original inspiration for the story though I don’t know if it’s true. I worked nearby in the summers when I was in high school. It certainly had the look inside, is in Maine, and has a winding path to the beach that runs through very tall bushes you can’t see out of. It was called the Lookout. It’s totally changed since I was there in the 80’s, now it seems to be condos and they changed the grounds completely. If you look at images you can see old photos and it does have the look of the film. https://www.jeanknapp.com/vacation-re...

Thank you, I didn't know about the Lookout.

I was able to find one article on hauntings in Ogunquit.
https://www.seacoastonline.com/story/...
Do you know of any other worthwhile sites in the area?

message 14: by Anne (new)

Anne Well, I worked at a couple of the inns owned by the same family. They used to put us teens up in their big, old house for the summer. It was originally built by a sea captain who supposedly haunted it. The girls all lived in the attic where there was a bedroom, bathroom, and living room on the 3rd floor. We had some experiences like seeing something on the stairs, feeling like we were touched when no one was around, things being moved, etc. I haven;t seen any articles about it. The house was called Cherry Lane which is the street it’s on just up from the Lookout.

I don't put much stock in that considering MacDill Airforce base is located there so who knows what they are doing over there. lol Or it could possibly be one of those drones flying over and checking out our stuff. Wouldn't surprise me one bit. :)

J. Gowin My boyhood self often found entertainment in mysticism and pulp fiction. Strangely, the two have a real world crossing point in New York City. It seems that the character's popularity may have led to the creation of a tulpa of the Shadow.

Be not afraid. The freakiest camping story that I've heard was the Allagash Abduction.
https://unsolved.com/gallery/allagash...
https://youtu.be/dM2DFl1FJps

My creepiest camping experience was was while fly-fishing on the backside of Smokey Mountains National Park. I was working on catching breakfast on a foggy fall morning, when I heard an elk bugle echoing through the mist. Imagine the silence of those mountain mists broken by this sound coming from everywhere and nowhere.
