HR-ML Please use this for the above 2 topics.

Roberta2 Well, I missed the discussion, but here's my 2 cents. I liked the previous discussion group where there were no limits on our discussion as long as we were polite to each other. It felt more like getting together for coffee or wine and talking about books and any other topic we liked. But, I guess I will adjust.

I'm with Roberta2. Not to mention the fact that now I'll have to think about which of the subgroups to post at. A lot of work for an old brain. But, as Roberta says, I will adjust also.

OLT BTW, if there is anyone here who did not get the latest Erin Satie HR, it is on sale today for 99 cents. Book of Love

HR-ML IIRC a rep from the Ohio House is proposing a law exempting
universities and employers from requiring a COVID test or vac
(or other vac) as a means of admission to a univer. or as a
means of employment.

NPR reported universities routinely require proof of vaccines
IE. MMR vaccine etc, so it's already has a precedent set.

HappyBookWorm2020 I liked the old way too. It was more fluid and we could freely communicate what was on our mind. Kept things lively, to use one of Carla Kelly's favorite words.

HappyBookWorm2020 OLT wrote: "BTW, if there is anyone here who did not get the latest Erin Satie HR, it is on sale today for 99 cents. Book of Love"

I saw that and got it immediately. I really loved that book. I am hoping this means that soon there will be a third book. She is such a good writer.

HappyBookWorm2020 FYI wanted to add that I'm with OLT on this being one of the few places I can discuss politics with a group. My state is blood red. Politics all mixed up with race and religion makes me want to move but I have family nearby and I'm a little old to transplant.

I am having lunch this Saturday with one of my friends who is also a flaming liberal. This is only my second lunch with a friend since Covid arrived.

message 9: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 Oh Yes, I loved Book of Love too.

My daughter and I had a discussion yesterday. She says that she thinks most people and politicians are unaware of or completely ignoring how angry she and her fellow millennials are. They want something done about global warming and want it done now. They are represented by (mostly) old white men who don't seem to care if they have a future. It's one of the reasons she and many others aren't having children. Even her friends who have had children worry that they have brought those children into a world that is going to fry. My son talks about these same issues.
She also mentioned a trend where

message 10: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 Oops. Didn't mean to post--wasn't finished. lol

She talked about young people who aren't interested in saving for retirement because they don't believe they will be able to retire and so they just spend for small luxuries as they accumulate the funds. This horrifies me because I don't want my son doing this. My daughter won't even though she says there won't be social security when she retires.

message 11: by Carol (new)

Carol I have been worried about global warming and overpopulation since I was in HS. Remember when Jimmy Carter put solar panels on top of The White House? Everyone poo-pooed it and Reagan took them down. How right Carter was. From what I'm reading global warming is happening much faster than predicted.

Maybe they should invest in a clean energy ETF and put it in an IRA. Might be something they could feel good about and also have retirement funds.

message 12: by Carol (new)

Carol With the Covid virus deaths and the wealth inequities, the birth rate is now lower than the death rate. I remember reading somewhere awhile ago that the population growth will eventually peak and come down. I hoped it would have happened earlier and without Covid.

HR-ML Roberta2---

Old white men run the US. While at the store, I saw this bumper sticker "I'm Republican + work for a living. I don't have time to protest." I wanted to leave a note on his windshield "GOP= your gods are Trump + power + money." But I declined.

While on the Better World Books website, I saw a Rand Paul bk dissing the UN.

message 14: by Carol (new)

Carol Yeah, I know, but not for long. They can only do it by stacking the voter booth. If one listens to FOX and ONI only, believing all other news organizations were progressive or socialist or communist, it stands to reason they have become white nationalists.

message 15: by HR-ML (new)

HR-ML Carol----

I'm so tired of socialist label. I don't call Mitch + co. reactionaries,
even though tempted.

message 16: by Carol (new)

Carol What's so funny is they give the socialist label to the poor SA countries instead of the Scandinavian countries. And equate communism with socialism. No way to talk to any of them because they don't know "the facts."

message 17: by Carol (new)

Carol It's pretty hot here. We had a power outage to nights in a row. It's started both times at about 6:30, just when everyone probably got home from work, turned up their A/C, and started dinner. Both nights I was trying to make my coffee and was too late.

message 18: by HR-ML (new)

HR-ML Why should some folks bother with "the facts?' it makes the other
group your automatic enemy.

Sorry about the power outage. We're had 97 & 93 day temps,
higher than usual. But hey, the cicadas took another vacay!

HR-ML When does the utility co. estimate the power will be restored? We were w/o AC x 3days until the AC man re-charged the AC unit.

Bill Cosby. I just read Bill Cosby's conviction was overturned! And he was released from prison!!!

message 21: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 You have got to be kidding me. But you aren't HR-ML. What do women have to do to get any justice?

message 22: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 It has been boiling hot here in New Hampshire for the last 4 days, but apparently we are going to get a break tomorrow and into the weekend.

message 23: by Roberta2 (new)

Roberta2 I remember when we didn't have air conditioning here because it only got hot and humid for about 2 weeks in July. Those days are gone.

message 24: by HR-ML (last edited Jun 30, 2021 03:05PM) (new)

HR-ML I wish women got justice. I am disheartened about Cosby. But I need the details.

When I was a kid I disliked AC, now I need it. I first experienced AC with Louisiana relatives in the 1960s. Brave Mom took her 4 kids aged 2 to 12 on a train to Louisiana. Dad had to work.

It was a because of a technicality. Corsby was told he would not be tried in a criminal trial during his civil trial. He therefore admitted to crimes and didn't take the fifth. Although the verdict was not overturned, he was freed and cannot be retried on the same charges.

message 26: by HR-ML (last edited Jun 30, 2021 05:41PM) (new)

HR-ML Bummer news. Do we know if the criminal case & civil were both in PA ?
I think the victim Ms Constant (SP?) worked for Temple U in PA?
So the 1st prosecutor made a deal that Cosby would testify freely w/o a
criminal indictment hanging over his head?

message 27: by Carol (new)

Carol Both were in PA. I can't believe that my power is out again. I hope they get it fixed soon because it's supposed to storm.

message 28: by HR-ML (new)

HR-ML Carol, hoping your power is restored.

HappyBookWorm2020 Carol, I also hope your power is restored. That is miserable.

HR-ML Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton's Doomed Campaign
Am reading about HRC's 2016 POTUS campaign. There was
a fair amt of infighting & per the authors, no one in the campaign
had the final say. 10 speechwriter's wrote her campaign announce-
ment! Just overkill. 10 egos fighting to be the alpha dog?

Everybody likes to point the finger at Hillary Clinton and her campaign as the reason she lost. Well, perhaps partly. I will, however, continue to believe that the media giving so much coverage to Trump and equating the silly e-mail "scandal" of Hillary's to all of Trump's lie and add in wonderful James Comey and there's the reason she was defeated. Oh, and the fact that she's a woman (and married to Bill). Don't you think that every candidate's campaign has infighting and disorganization?

message 32: by HR-ML (last edited Jul 01, 2021 07:44AM) (new)

HR-ML OLT-----

I'm about 26% into the book. The authors gave examples of where Bill got off HRC's message when interviewed or speaking on her behalf at a rally, gave HRC bad advise or argued w/ the press about Bill's own POTUS legacy. Bill's ego could not take a back seat to HRC's plans?

Also per authors, HRC's campaign mgr. Mook sabotaged HRC's "Ready for Hillary" PAC and it's volunteers and tried to reduce other campaign staffer's influence on HRC.
10 speechwriters on 1 speech? Who was 'minding the store?' HRC + Biden both sounded indecisive in this book. Did she even want to be POTUS?

Yes, every campaign has infighting. But HRC did not appear to learn anything from her 1st unsuccessful POTUS bid. Obama ran a much tighter race.

Then the email issue which never went away.

message 33: by Carol (last edited Jul 01, 2021 07:23AM) (new)

Carol Was Trump's campaign more organized? RNC plays dirty. Russia plays dirty. Comey rally screwed up. Press WAS a broken record on those emails. And Hillary didn't show well.

message 34: by OLT (new)

OLT Anybody and everybody writes books about anything and everything. One would have to read everything written about a subject to get a full and complete picture, and this only by sorting through all the subjective relating of information.

message 35: by HR-ML (last edited Apr 30, 2024 12:03PM) (new)

HR-ML Carol---

So far, not much on Trump's campaign. But other books I've read on DJT said didn't stay on message. He ignored his advisors. RNC had/ has dirty tricks.

In this book, HRC and Bernie jockeyed for position. But he shot himself in the foot
when he called himself a socialist, which scared many Americans. HRC reportedly played up to Latino & LGBT voters. Abedin was her gate-keeper. Few staffers were allowed to speak w/ HRC directly.

Mgr Mook wanted to show the "real Hillary" by having her appear on the Ellen Show, SNL, etc.

message 36: by Carol (new)

Carol She was not a good campaigner and did not do well when interviewed. It seems people judge by how much they like the candidate instead of their ability or knowledge. Too bad because look what we landed up with! I think when Biden ran, people maybe finally got it.

HRC was/ is a strong woman & some men prefer a woman to keep her thoughts to herself.

We had our grade school reunion RE 18 mos ago. The committee got together at an eatery on Mon. One man made a racist remark and I called him on it. He was dazed when I finished. My logic trumped his prejudice? I'm not perfect but this guy has probably
never gotten to know any people of color. He's smug about his superiority & is short & has a Napoleon complex.

I was just chatting on my HS website. It is unbelievable to me that there are about 5 or 6 people that love Orangeman. They even think he really one the election. They're mad about big business controlling the government (which I am too), but think Orangeman was fixing it. As far as they were concerned he was bring back the good old days....sure white male superiority.

I feel if someone carries hate in his /her heart for another, he/she
also hates himself/ herself. No one is superior. Yrs ago bosky Mel Gibson was speeding on the Pacific Coast Highway. When pulled over he said to the police "do you know
who I am?" No one cared, Mel.

I think what I said about white male superiority was wrong. I think they feel taken advantage of, by big companies, government giving to the poor, high taxes, etc. and think Trump was fixing it.

HR-ML My sis-in-law buried 2 husbands & is dating a self-made HS educated millionaire. He has 2 homes. He gets tax abatements when he builds a new business.
SIL is smart and witty. Both supported/ support DJT. Wonder if he'd kick her to the curb if she disagreed with him over something major?

Jonathan Karl covered White House for ABC-news & Katy Tur for NBC-news. I read both their books about covering Trump in the WH. According to these 2 , even though white working class men were a big part of DJT's political base, both journalists said Don avoided talking to these men in most cases. Because they had nothing in common & he preferred interacting w/ millionaires and billionaires. So Don had typical politico behavior: using voters for photo ops and for votes. Ironically Don cut loans for small
farmers via the Dept of Agriculture. Many voters cut him too much slack.

I always thought that Hilary Clinton was intelligent and probably personable with people she trusted, but she was extremely cautious in how she answered questions. I suspect that made a lot of people observing this in the news distrust her. I understand why she was like that - the woman was attacked from all sides.

message 43: by HappyBookWorm2020 (last edited Jul 01, 2021 09:07PM) (new)

HappyBookWorm2020 I have an issue with a woman who stays with a man like Bill, who was accused by several women of raping them. Without Bill, I would have no problem with voting for Hilary for any office on her own merits. The husband, though. :shakes head:

HR-ML HBW2020-----

HRC was/ is very intelligent. but she did not stay on top of how 2nd campaign was run. She told campaign mgr to run things cheap. Normally each state has a pd state captain who knows the locals and how to get out the vote. HRC learned the hard way her mgr had no pd state captains and she was v angry. He had a few voluntary state captains w/ gobs of experience.

Why has Hill stayed w/ Bill all these yrs? They needed each other for political ambitions? Bill abused his power w/ women in the statehouse and the WH.

I've had a few medical social work jobs, one at a clinic serving those 60 and over. Our accountant had worked w/ Bill C when he was Arkansas Gov. She said he was known for his charm... but women did not trust him.

HR-ML - that is interesting, what your accountant said. From the way that Hilary dropped everything and went to Bill when he had a medical event (heart attack?) I think she did and does love him very much. I don't think Hilary has a line in the sand when it comes to Bill, or at least, she has never found it.

They certainly do. It's not my place to judge (hard for me). I think she loves him more than anyone in the world, except maybe her child.

HappyBookWorm2020 I'm outraged by the collapse of the Surfside Condo. Apparently, problems with the concrete were reported years ago, and no action was ever taken. Treated it like okay, I have this piece of paper, let me file it. What it reported wasn't important.

Nothing will bring those people back but I truly hope they get skint in court by lawsuits. I don't know if what they did is considered criminal.

Now the people who evacuated have lost their photos and important mementos.

Here in Florida we are wondering if that tower is just the tip of the iceberg. There are two more buildings nearby, especially the sister tower, that are showing similar, though not as severe, damage. It amazes me that there is still oceanfront construction going on here.

Carol We have similar problems here in NJ. We are a very small state with a very large shoreline. Most of our population know we have a global warming and sea level rising problem, but they continue to buy and build close to the shore. Some changes have been made to the building codes, but I don't think it takes into consideration how fast global warming is happening.

The fossil fuel industry has a lock on congress and it's not only the GOP. So more people will die, it will cost Americans more in emergency funds, and the pols will get money to run their campaigns.
