Bionic Jean Here is a new thread for our book reviews, as the earlier one was taking a long time to load because of its length.

Please LINK HERE for the earlier thread.

Werner Although Firestarter by Stephen King Firestarter was the first Stephen King novel I read (out of only four to date --despite his popularity and my liking for speculative fiction, he's never been an author I've sought out very much), until now it was the only one of the four that I hadn't ever reviewed. I've now remedied that omission, with this three-star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... .

Pam Baddeley Thanks Jean - the thread kept timing out for me. I'm still having that problem with long threads on other groups at the moment.

Read book 3 of two series:

Murder by Ghostlight by J C Briggs - reviewed - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5315246141
and
The Numbing by Flint Maxwell - reviewed - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5374921527

Thanks, Jean!

The Housemaid's Secret by Freida McFadden
The Housemaid's Secret (The Housemaid, #2) by Freida McFadden
Good enough, but I enjoyed the first book far more. This isn't as dark.

Yes I can't get into the 'what have you just read' thread on the All about Books group at all.

PamG Here is my 4.61 rounded to 5 stars review of Cold-Blooded Liar Cold-Blooded Liar (Romantic Suspense #27; San Diego #1) by Karen Rose by Karen Rose:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Karen Rose knows how to hook readers with a prologue and keep them engaged throughout a novel. Cold-Blooded Liar , the first book in her San Diego Case Files series, is no different. It combines a police procedural with some amateur sleuthing and a hint of romantic suspense.

Melissa (Mel’s Bookshelf) Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Loved this sci-fi classic!

Spin (Spin, #1) by Robert Charles Wilson

Pam Baddeley Read first two books in a series by Christopher Coleman, another post apocalypse story but quite different from the Flint Maxwell one:

They Came with the Snow - reviewed - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5374941793
and
The Melting - reviewed - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5374942142

John Warner The Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith
★★★★

Although one can read the sixth novel as a standalone, if you do, you will miss out on the growing chemistry between the two protagonists, Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott, an employee orginally hired as a secretary only to become Strike's partner. Both are drawn to each other but fear that acting on their impulses would ruin their work relationship. For my full review, please click here.

PamG Here is my 4.02 rounded to 4 stars review of A Witch's Guide to Fake Dating a Demon A Witch's Guide to Fake Dating a Demon by Sarah Hawley by Sarah Hawley:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

This is a delightful, charming, and fun paranormal romance with great characterization and some deeper themes woven into the novel.

Chrissie I have completed The Getting of Wisdom by Henry Handel Richardson. At the start I wasn't so sure I'd like it. I've ended up liking it a lot because of the central protagonist. It's semi-autobiographical fiction. The author is an Australian woman, not a man.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 31: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma Doris Lessing showed in 1963 that it wasn't possible for even A Woman on a Roof to escape unwanted attention. I'm not sure things have changed that much in 50 years, have they?
A Woman on a Roof by Doris Lessing 2.5~3★ My review of A Woman on A Roof with a link to the short story itself

PattyMacDotComma I was hoping to find an answer to What Are Mondays Good For, Anyway?, not being a fan of Mondays, and while I enjoyed the illustrations, I don't think I'd have been happy sending my kids to school with these suggestions.
What Are Mondays Good For, Anyway? by Nicole Frankel 2.5★ My review of What Are Mondays Good For, Anyway? with illustrations, of course

PamG I finished Georgie, All Along Georgie, All Along by Kate Clayborn by Kate Clayborn.

My 4 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Entertaining contemporary romance....

message 36: by PamG (new)

PamG Here is my 4 star review of Good Dog, Bad Cop Good Dog, Bad Cop (The K Team #4) by David Rosenfelt by David Rosenfelt:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

The story captivated me with the terrifying realism of the prologue. A twisty, deeply involved, and absorbing plot kept me engaged throughout this riveting mystery. With twists and turns, the investigation builds momentum until it peaks with an edge-of-your-seat finish.

message 38: by Ian (new)

Ian The Foreign Exchange ... Mambo Reina is great. A vodou priestess in New Orleans who solves crimes. Love this series so much.

The Foreign Exchange (Mambo Reina, #2) by Veronica G. Henry

Chrissie I have completed My Brilliant Career by the Australian female author writing under the male pseudonym Miles Franklin. The title is to be interpreted ironically. I have put a big effort in trying to be fair in my judgment of the book.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 40: by PamG (new)

PamG Here's my 3.3 rounded to 3 stars review of Missing Clarissa Missing Clarissa by Ripley Jones by Ripley Jones:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Young adult mystery
Overall, this was intriguing, entertaining, and had an action packed ending with diverse characters. However, some of the items revealed in the interviews seemed unrealistic for adults to divulge to teenagers.

Rosh ~catching up slowly~ The Edge of Madness by K.A. Last
The Edge of Madness (Wonder in Neverland, #2) by K.A. Last
The second book in the 'Wonder in Neverland' series combining Alice in wonderland and Peter Pan. Loved this book as much as the first.

PattyMacDotComma A classic that I somehow missed! A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle has everything I'd have loved as a young reader: kids on a quest, a mysterious missing father, magic spirits, time travel, and Evil to be overcome! I still enjoyed it now.
A Wrinkle in Time (Time Quintet, #1) by Madeleine L'Engle 4★ My review of A Wrinkle in Time

message 49: by Canadian Jen (new)

Canadian Jen Finished Down River Down River by John Hart . Not my favourite - it is an earlier one by him so can see how Hart has developed his skill more now with his later works. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 50: by Werner (new)

Werner Doing a retrospective review, last week, of a science fiction book read decades ago reminded me of the many other past reads in the same genre that remain to review. The one I selected for attention this time is Planet of Exile by Ursula K. Le Guin Planet of Exile by Ursula k. Le Guin, now reviewed here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... . Originally, I'd intended to give it three stars; but the process of memory and reflection for the review convinced me that it fully deserves four.
