Kristianna "Kris" Campbell, a 21st-century art history student haunted by dreams of a fierce 17th-century Highlander, travels to Scotland hoping to connect with her MacGregor ancestry. Kris awakens in 1603, mistaken for a trespasser and brought before the Laird himself—Iain MacGregor, devastatingly real and suspicious of the strangely dressed woman found on his lands. Terrified of revealing her Campbell name, Kris claims amnesia and then pretends her last name is Armstrong. As Iain grapples with the impossible stranger who stirs unwelcome feelings and harbors suspicions of witchcraft or espionage , Kris navigates the dangers of the past, aided by Iain’s mother, Sorcha , who reveals her own secret—she's a time traveler from the year 2000.
Caught between the Highlander she's falling for and the secret that could destroy them, Kris agrees to a handfasting with Iain—a marriage of convenience for her protection. But logic soon gives way to undeniable passion. Just as love blooms, Iain discovers her true identity from an ID card hidden in her backpack. Feeling utterly betrayed, he leaves her. Heartbroken, Kris seeks out Aoife (the disguised Fae who sold her the watch) , who reveals her curse—to unite destined souls—and grants Kris's anguished wish to return home.
Kris awakens back in her own time, months after her disappearance, devastated and discovering she carries Iain's child. Meanwhile, a tormented Iain realizes his mistake and seeks out Aoife, choosing to give up his time, his title, and his clan to follow Kris. He finds her in 21st-century Scotland , where they reunite, confess their love , and learn they are expecting twins, ready to face a future together across time.
