I was excited to see you reading this one! Do you think "The Depressed Person" is one of the bangers?
That my favorite! I Also really liked "Tri-Stan," even though I think it's typically regarded as the most confusing one. Love the excess — reminded me of Pynchon's Mason & Dixon in that way.
Ah man, I really admire "The Depressed Person" too. I remember it being emotionally draining to read, but that's what I appreciate. I imagine it's pretty authentic to the experience.
To be honest I found that story in an anthology, and haven't actually read Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, but I'll defintiely keep "Tri-Stan" in mind when I get around to that book!
