Yahia Shabara I too found the human element missing. As I was reading, several times I felt that events have happened which seem to must have brought huge emotions, but those emotional parts were glossed over. But I liked it that way really. I think it made me try to imagine it myself.

Susan Joy Paul I was going to write a full review, but you summed up my opinion perfectly. The book was interesting, but there was no heart. Caring about the characters, as much as they suffered, was difficult. I never got to know them. Also, the source material was never discussed. Did the men keep journals? I learned a lot but didn't feel much reading this book.
