Can you justify your stance that this is a self-serving telling in the face of your (correct) claim that the character whose perspective is shown isn't like the author? Who exactly would be served in this setup? The fictional character?
He does provide the other characters with their time in the "confession booth" though. That's part of the buildup of the story. Maybe finish the book first before claiming that he doesn't do something?
