2. The Joy Makers by James Gunn
3. Earth Abides by George R. Stewart
4. A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller Jr.

None of these are modern sci-fi; these are books that helped lay the foundations for today's sci-fi.

I'm not a Blake Crouch fan, but some of Weir's stuff is pretty good. Stephenson can be entertaining if you don't stop to think too much about what's going on.
