Jan Ah, I've read excerpts from this and have seen the film. The images from both the pages and silver screen still haunt me, and I just don't think I could read the whole book. Although I'm from a big city in Missouri, I'm not far away from the site of this book; perhaps it hits a bit too close to home literally. I'm curious to learn your experience of it.

H (trying to keep up with GR friends) Balikov I agree with Jan, with this exception -- it's the images in the book that continue to haunt me.

Amazing writing.

Carolina I loved the idea of the speed dating list! I’ll start doing it too :)

message 6: by Ian (new)

Ian Payton I love the Speed Dating idea! I've taken to using the "Private Notes" feature in GR to remind myself why I've put a book on my TBR, but there are still *loads* of older ones that I just have no clue about!

message 7: by Laura (new)

Laura Yes - I saw the movie - quite a long time ago - well before Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games - long ago. And I thought it was excellent. The character of Ree shows extraordinary bravery and resilience - and it rang true - I think primarily because she didn't have any other choice.

message 8: by Travis (new)

Travis Mcgee One of the few movies that lives up to the book. Jennifer carries the entire movie at age 20 and was nominated for and should have won the Academy Award.

message 9: by Fran (new)

Fran Hawthorne I love your Speed Dating idea. Sometimes I wish I could speed-read, but I kind of don't trust the concept ... Anyway, thanks for your thoughtful review, which I assume wasn't speedily written.

Adina ( on a short Hiatus) Carolina wrote: "I loved the idea of the speed dating list! I’ll start doing it too :)" Good luck

Good idea, I never used the private notes but I might use them now.

Adina ( on a short Hiatus) Laura wrote: "Yes - I saw the movie - quite a long time ago - well before Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games - long ago. And I thought it was excellent. The character of Ree shows extraordinary bravery and re..." Exactly, it was her only hope to be brave.

I sort of speed read as I do not read all the words on the page but it is only worth it if you do not mind forgetting very quickly what you read.

Magdelanye Awesome review in that you have taken a book that I normally would shun [violence, the chill factor] and made it alluring.
Love your Speed Dating with a Book!
Over my summer travels i encountered in two bookstores, one in Estonia a small round table and in Warsaw a basket of books wrapped in brown paper decorated and labeled Blind date with a Book. Of course I bought one, even though i have never had much luck with blind dates and I've never had to pay for a date before.
I carried it around until our moment arrived and I carefully unwrapped it.
Would I have chosen this book myself? Yes, definitely. That I was by that time taking a train through the very region the book is set added a sweet synchronicity. Adding to my interest, the coastal setting so similar to mine with its particular entrenched alliances and hostilities.

message 16: by Magdelanye (new)

Magdelanye almost done here but need to add that it was a most successful date, considering what is being asked by the book; the eternal grim question: why can't we get along? What is at the root of hostility?
I made it last as long as I could before passing it on.
I kept the cover.which,
I must add had the GR star rating and brief overview in bold painted on to the wrapper.

message 17: by Sergio (new)

Sergio Ruiz Nice connection with Ruth. I agree with others, Jennifer Lawrence is excellent in the film.

Left Coast Justin I haven't read this but I really need to. I also need to adopt your speed dating system! If I haven't read a book in ten years, time to donate it to the library or something.

message 19: by Sue (new)

Sue K H Great review, Adina. I'm thrilled to hear this is a good book. I saw the film long ago and loved it and when I found out it was a book I bought it. It's been sitting on my shelf for a long time also and I'm determined to get to it this year!

I've never been to blind dates so it was fun to set up bookish ones. What a nice story about the novel you discovered. I need to know the title, obviously.

Adina ( on a short Hiatus) Sergio wrote: "Nice connection with Ruth. I agree with others, Jennifer Lawrence is excellent in the film." i like her so i am sure she was. Will have to find that movie.

message 23: by Dennis (new)

Dennis I generally have books on my list for ten years before I get around to them! (I can't listen to audiobooks to "speed" the process - low attention span.) I saw the film long before reading the book and although there are some changes, the most important thing is that the book gives more of Ree, her background and circumstances. Possibly even grimmer. But well-worth reading, better idea of the region than "Hillbilly Elegy" which was mostly insulting to the people (and which explains a lot about J.D. Vance.)

Adina ( on a short Hiatus) Dennis wrote: "I generally have books on my list for ten years before I get around to them! (I can't listen to audiobooks to "speed" the process - low attention span.) message 25: by Charles (new)

Charles The movie is excellent!

message 26: by Craig (new)

Craig A speed dating list is such a good idea!

Adina ( on a short Hiatus) Charles wrote: "The movie is excellent!" Good to know

Adina ( on a short Hiatus) Craig wrote: "A speed dating list is such a good idea!" it is, i do it every year.

message 29: by Jonie (new)

Jonie Neese The movie was better than the book. That rarely happens.

Adina ( on a short Hiatus) Jonie wrote: "The movie was better than the book. That rarely happens." i really liked the book as well.

Tamar...playing hooky for a few hours today Such a fantanstic review, Adina! And thanks to Jonie above...I will possibly look for the movie first - which I rarely do because once I've seen the movie, I rarely read the book, and vice versa (LOL). I watch about one or two series a year and Ozark was a favorite of mine, too.

message 32: by Vasilii (new)

Vasilii So glad you enjoyed it!!!🖤💗

message 33: by Donne (new)

Donne Great review, Adina. I did see the movie though and it was really good.

message 34: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Carson I need to try that thing of reading 10% of a book and feeling free to abandon it if I don't like it.

message 35: by Kath (new)

Kath B Great review Adina. I love your speed dating policy. I might have to do the same with my batch of tbr books 📚 🤔

message 36: by Fred (new)

Fred Jenkins The 10% test is a really good idea. I used to feel an obligation to finish a book if I started it, but no more. Life is too short and there are too many books that I would like to read.
