Ah, I've read excerpts from this and have seen the film. The images from both the pages and silver screen still haunt me, and I just don't think I could read the whole book. Although I'm from a big city in Missouri, I'm not far away from the site of this book; perhaps it hits a bit too close to home literally. I'm curious to learn your experience of it.

I love the Speed Dating idea! I've taken to using the "Private Notes" feature in GR to remind myself why I've put a book on my TBR, but there are still *loads* of older ones that I just have no clue about!
Yes - I saw the movie - quite a long time ago - well before Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games - long ago. And I thought it was excellent. The character of Ree shows extraordinary bravery and resilience - and it rang true - I think primarily because she didn't have any other choice.
One of the few movies that lives up to the book. Jennifer carries the entire movie at age 20 and was nominated for and should have won the Academy Award.
I love your Speed Dating idea. Sometimes I wish I could speed-read, but I kind of don't trust the concept ... Anyway, thanks for your thoughtful review, which I assume wasn't speedily written.

Laura wrote: "Yes - I saw the movie - quite a long time ago - well before Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games - long ago. And I thought it was excellent. The character of Ree shows extraordinary bravery and re..." Exactly, it was her only hope to be brave.

Fran wrote: "I love your Speed Dating idea. Sometimes I wish I could speed-read, but I kind of don't trust the concept ... I sort of speed read as I do not read all the words on the page but it is only worth it if you do not mind forgetting very quickly what you read.
Awesome review in that you have taken a book that I normally would shun [violence, the chill factor] and made it alluring.
Love your Speed Dating with a Book!
Over my summer travels i encountered in two bookstores, one in Estonia a small round table and in Warsaw a basket of books wrapped in brown paper decorated and labeled Blind date with a Book. Of course I bought one, even though i have never had much luck with blind dates and I've never had to pay for a date before.
I carried it around until our moment arrived and I carefully unwrapped it.
Would I have chosen this book myself? Yes, definitely. That I was by that time taking a train through the very region the book is set added a sweet synchronicity. Adding to my interest, the coastal setting so similar to mine with its particular entrenched alliances and hostilities.
almost done here but need to add that it was a most successful date, considering what is being asked by the book; the eternal grim question: why can't we get along? What is at the root of hostility?
I made it last as long as I could before passing it on.
I kept the cover.which,
I must add had the GR star rating and brief overview in bold painted on to the wrapper.
I haven't read this but I really need to. I also need to adopt your speed dating system! If I haven't read a book in ten years, time to donate it to the library or something.
Great review, Adina. I'm thrilled to hear this is a good book. I saw the film long ago and loved it and when I found out it was a book I bought it. It's been sitting on my shelf for a long time also and I'm determined to get to it this year!

Left Coast Justin wrote: "I haven't read this but I really need to. I also need to adopt your speed dating system! If I haven't read a book in ten years, time to donate it to the library or something." Exactly. That is why I am only giving them a 10% chance to change my mind.
I generally have books on my list for ten years before I get around to them! (I can't listen to audiobooks to "speed" the process - low attention span.) I saw the film long before reading the book and although there are some changes, the most important thing is that the book gives more of Ree, her background and circumstances. Possibly even grimmer. But well-worth reading, better idea of the region than "Hillbilly Elegy" which was mostly insulting to the people (and which explains a lot about J.D. Vance.)
Dennis wrote: "I generally have books on my list for ten years before I get around to them! (I can't listen to audiobooks to "speed" the process - low attention span.) Jonie wrote: "The movie was better than the book. That rarely happens." i really liked the book as well.
Such a fantanstic review, Adina! And thanks to Jonie above...I will possibly look for the movie first - which I rarely do because once I've seen the movie, I rarely read the book, and vice versa (LOL). I watch about one or two series a year and Ozark was a favorite of mine, too.
I need to try that thing of reading 10% of a book and feeling free to abandon it if I don't like it.
Great review Adina. I love your speed dating policy. I might have to do the same with my batch of tbr books 📚 🤔
