Beautiful review. The series would've been so perfect for me if he didn't become so obvious and heavy handed with his religious framework, but nevertheless the overall thematics and that ending — excluding the pervading view of govt — landed well with me. I'm glad you enjoyed it
I too had hoped the boundaries of 'traditional' religious script had been pushed - but the way the conflict of mortal loyalty VS the higher cause that transcends works of man - that was superbly handled in a way that made the author's decision to follow that accepted foundation a statement in its own right. Not a flaw, that he chose not to bust the envelope here. He wrote exactly as he intended. But: yeah, on a personal note, the non traditional, or not quite so obvious take, could have been glorious....that's for another read and another author to explore. I try always to interpret what the author put on the page, and he did a riveting job from that angle.
yeah in that regard I quite agree since I now see the obvious setup for it in previous books. I guess I was just blindsided to it in my initial read and thus expected more from him
