I saw this book in a store around 1981 and the cover freaked me out. It was an old woman holding a green ball covered with tentancles. Ring any bells for anyone?

Maybe have a look on Pinterest. Plug in something like 1970s sci-fi / horror novel cover. Also, H.P. Lovecraft might be an author worth looking into. He was very big on tentacles. He has a very extensive listing (>5000 works) and many of his books have multiple cover versions, so it might take a while.

I thought of that, but I've been a huge fan of Lovecraft for over 30 years, so I'm pretty sure I would have come across it if it was one of his.
